Job Description
Summary
Are you looking to get your foot in the door and start a hands-on career in a growing company? COST of Wisconsin is looking for a reliable, hard-working individual to join our team as a Yard and Mechanic Shop Assistant!
You'll help keep our yard and shop running smoothly. You'll support mechanics, help organize tools and equipment, and learn how things work in a fast-paced environment. If you like working with your hands and being part of a team, we'd love to meet you! We build dreams. See our work on COST.
What You'll Do:
- Assist the supervisor, director, and others in the shop and yard, in all job aspects, as needed.
- Clean up dirt and debris in work areas; perform general housekeeping and shop upkeep.
- Pull material and equipment for jobs; check in and restock material and equipment.
- Assist shipping and receiving with loading and unloading items.
- Maintain and organize the yard and storage areas, keeping tools, parts, and equipment easily accessible.
- Drive a forklift (training provided).
- Use hand tools (drills, saws); read a tape measure; may assist with minor repairs.
- Work independently and as a team member; providing exceptional customer service.
- Follow safety guidelines and company procedures.
What You Bring
Knowledge, Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Strongly preferred: DOT certification
Experience
- Preferred: Two or more years of mechanic training/experience
- Preferred: Knowledge of the construction industry and related equipment/tools
- Combined experience and education will be considered
Skills, Abilities
- Must demonstrate COST's Core Competencies
- Mechanical aptitude
- Ability to learn to safely drive a forklift
- Preferred: Ability to operate various trucks; light, medium, and heavy equipment and tools; automotive lifts; and other hydraulic equipment (for purposes of repair and maintenance)
- Able to pay significant attention to safety standards, procedures, and practices
- Strong communication skills including reading, writing, presenting, and listening
- Ability to respond rapidly and accurately, to resolve issues during emergency repairs
- Able to prioritize work, especially repair issues; able to pivot due to changing demands
- Team player with positive attitude and strong work ethic
- Ability to identify, explain, and solve problems, working with vehicle/equipment users
- Organized and detail oriented
Physical
- Use hands to handle or feel; stand, sit, walk, climb, balance; stop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear
- Close, distant, color, and peripheral vision; depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
- Lift 70 lbs. floor to waist, 90 lbs. waist to chest, 25 lbs. from chest to overhead; carry 50 lbs. for 50 ft.; push a 100 lb. wheeled cart for 100 ft.; and drag 50 lbs. for 100 ft.
Work Environment
- Work is primarily performed in shop and storage yard settings with typical smells, sounds, and moderate to loud noise
- Exposure to the outdoors, possible toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, or airborne particles, and moving mechanical parts
