Overview The Development Officer, Yale Cancer Center, will work closely with the Assistant Vice President, and will build and manage relationships with faculty, grateful patients, grateful patient families, alumni, non-alumni, and friends of the School and University with a goal to secure gifts in support of Yale Cancer Center/Smilow Cancer Hospital. A creative and energetic fundraiser, the Development Officer will bring a high level of sophistication and professional expertise to the team. The successful candidate will be a skilled relationship builder who will inspire trust and collaboration with faculty, and colleagues across the departments, the school, and Yale New Haven Health System. The Development Officer will build and manage a portfolio of 100 to 120 major gift prospects, implement strategies to qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects to achieve both fundraising goals and the donors' philanthropic objectives and establish and achieve annual and team metrics, including donor qualifications, visits, solicitations, gifts closed, and other key performance metrics. The successful candidate will work closely with development colleagues at Yale University, Yale School of Medicine, Smilow Cancer Hospital, and Yale New Haven Health System in support of a complex and collaborative team environment. They will also work closely with faculty in the Yale Cancer Center/Smilow Cancer Hospital to identify fundraising priorities and prospects in support of short-term and long-term goals. The Development Officer will participate in professional development to achieve performance goals and support personal career growth. The Development Officer (Associate Director) will: Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects and donors capable of making gifts of $100,000 or more to support philanthropic priorities for Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital. Work with the Asst. VP of Development to develop, deliver and execute actionable plans to secure private philanthropic support for Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital. Works closely with faculty to help develop a robust grateful patient fundraising program. Utilize the University's Blackbaud CRM, HOPPER to document all planned and completed prospect interactions and strategies. Support open communications among team members, engage in team-building efforts, and participate in meetings and retreats that embrace and support YSM Office of Development and Alumni Affairs. In partnership with the Prospect Management and Research team, identify, assess, and engage new prospects capable of making gifts of $100K. Participate in the development of gift proposals, gift agreements, and other donor materials as needed. Required Skills and Abilities 1. Knowledge and understanding of college/university/academic medical fundraising practices. Ability to make informed decisions, together with strong analytic and strategic planning skills. 2. Ability to establish working relationships with a diverse faculty, staff, and donor population. Proven inter-personal, verbal, and written communication skills. 3. Ability to understand and synthesize diverse research and outreach initiatives into a cogent whole. 4. Ability to make informed decisions, together with strong analytic and strategic planning skills. Principal Responsibilities
- Develops cultivation and solicitation strategies for a portfolio of prospects and donors. Builds and manages network of relationships with prospective donors involving University administrators and faculty. Facilitates and coordinates all communication with these prospects and among the prospect's campus relationships. Promotes positive relations with these prospects and donors. 2. Evaluates various gift opportunities and giving vehicles and recommends the most suitable for a particular donor. 3. Interacts with internal contacts such as Deans, Directors, Faculty, Officers, and other Development staff to consult on University needs, to formulate strategies to promote prospect engagement with the University and to identify potential donors. 4. Assist with the strategy for and creation of written communications from various University administrators appropriate to a donor's interests. 5. Typically participates (often in concert with others) in gift solicitations to fund University programs and to enhance the development efforts of the Schools and departments. 6. May travel (possibly extensively) commensurate with Yale's standard expectations for fundraising activity, contact and travel. May involve international travel depending upon prospect assignments. 7. Performs additional development-related activities/efforts at the request of manager. 8. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field and four to six years of experience in fundraising or a related field, preferably in higher education or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with sensitive information and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
