ABOUT THE ROLE 

We are an ambitious, fast-scaling company backed by one of the largest and most respected furniture retailers in the United States. Our mission is to transform the future of furniture shopping through technology, and we’re building a team of bold innovators to help us do it. We’re on the lookout for an exceptional Director of Engineering to lead our cross-functional teams of backend, frontend, and QA engineers. In this pivotal role, you’ll own and drive all facets of our platform’s web engineering, from the services layer to customer-facing interfaces and API infrastructure.

As a key engineering leader, you will:

• Champion technical excellence across the stack while shaping the architectural direction of our platform.
• Coach, mentor, and empower high-performing teams to consistently deliver meaningful results and business value fostering a culture of excellence, ownership, and agile mindset at every level.
• Set clear goals, define growth paths, and foster a culture of accountability and innovation
• Drive the full development lifecycle of key features and enhancements from ideation to deployment ensuring timely delivery with uncompromising quality.
• Lead cross-functional collaboration by aligning priorities, optimizing resource allocation, and consistently delivering on project milestones.
• Proactively manage execution, monitoring progress, surfacing risks or bottlenecks early, and implementing strategic solutions to keep teams moving forward efficiently.
• Champion experimentation of emerging AI tools to boost developer and QA productivity.
• Champion cross-functional synergy by driving seamless collaboration between engineers, DevOps, and key stakeholders to ensure smooth integration and rapid delivery.
• Bridge the gap between tech and business while acting as a trusted liaison who translates technical complexity into clear, actionable insights across all teams.
• Cultivate a thriving culture of openness, empowering teams through knowledge sharing, transparent communication, and shared accountability.

What we’re looking for:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• Proven experience of 8+ years as Manager or Director leading frontend, backend, and QA engineers.
• Solid understanding of both JavaScript and TypeScript.
• Strong expertise in web technologies: React, Next.js, Node.js, and NestJS.
• Experience working with RDBMS and NoSQL databases is required. E.g., Postgres, MongoDB, and DynamoDB
• Proficient in Design Principles including Object Oriented Programming & Functional Programming to build scalable and easy to maintain software solutions.
• Understands the value of a data-centric approach to software engineering and passionate about the benefits of a well-architected data ecosystem. 
• Solid understanding of AWS services and infrastructure, particularly for web applications.
• Experience with performance optimization, security best practices, and RESTful API design and development.
• Proficiency in Agile methodologies & project management tools like Jira.
• Experience with automated code deployment pipelines using CI/CD tools like GitHub Actions.
• Excellent leadership and people management skills, with a track record of building and nurturing high-performing teams.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a focus on driving results and delivering exceptional user experiences.
• Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to interact with stakeholders at all levels.
• Prior experience in startup environments is a plus.
• Prior experience with e-commerce or retail companies is a strong benefit.
• Familiarity with modern AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or ChatGPT) to accelerate code generation, documentation, and refactoring.
• Experience using AI-powered debugging and testing tools to identify and resolve issues faster.
• Comfortable with prompt engineering practices to fine-tune interactions with AI assistants and agents to enhance the product and team efficiency.
