About the role

As a Payroll Services Associate, you'll play a crucial role in delivering accurate, efficient, and timely payroll data support for Betterment at Work clients. You will assist in the day-to-day operations that ensure smooth data transmission between client payroll providers and Betterment's systems.

This role focuses heavily on back-end processing work such as executing mass updates, auditing incoming data files, and troubleshooting discrepancies. While primarily tactical, it includes client-facing responsibilities, such as answering questions and providing support during payroll setup and ongoing data needs.

You'll work closely with internal stakeholders like Client Experience, Onboarding, and Engineering, contributing to seamless execution and client satisfaction through precise and process-driven work.

This is a salaried, non-exempt role that is based out of our NYC office. For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Tuesday through Thursday, weekly. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment's total compensation package for employees.

  • New York City: $70,000 - $80,000

A day in the life

  • Support clients during payroll setup and integration by executing technical tasks such as importing, reviewing, and updating payroll data
  • Perform recurring data audits to ensure payroll file accuracy and compliance with platform requirements
  • Respond to client inquiries related to payroll data discrepancies or integration status, escalating complex issues when needed
  • Manage routine file uploads and mass data updates to maintain payroll sync and accuracy across client plans
  • Investigate data mismatches and conduct root-cause analysis for common errors or inconsistencies
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure payroll workflows are properly configured and maintained
  • Contribute to internal documentation and knowledge sharing to streamline future support

What we're looking for

  • 2-3 years of experience in payroll operations, payroll support, or people operations roles
  • Familiarity with payroll software and file-based integrations (CSV, SFTP, or similar)
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., formulas, lookups, filters)
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to spot and correct data anomalies
  • Clear written communication skills for handling internal notes and client support emails
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, process-driven environment with high accuracy standards
  • Experience with CRM or ticketing systems such as Zendesk or Salesforce is a plus
  • General understanding of retirement plans or payroll provider workflows is preferred
