Job Description

The Senior OSP Design Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, and engineering oversight of complex outside plant (OSP) telecommunications infrastructure, including fiber and copper network systems. This role develops high-level and detailed designs for aerial, underground, and buried cable installations while ensuring compliance with industry standards, permitting regulations, and company goals. The Senior Engineer plays a key role in project lifecycle development, including cost estimation, permitting strategy, field verification, and design validation. This position interfaces with internal teams, contractors, municipalities, and vendors to support the delivery of scalable, cost-effective, and high-performance network solutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the engineering design of OSP projects including fiber optic and copper cable networks, conduit systems, poles, handholes, and related infrastructure.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, route selection, and field validations for aerial and underground fiber networks.
  • Develop construction-ready drawings, BOMs, splicing diagrams, and project documentation using AutoCAD, GIS, or equivalent design platforms.
  • Ensure all designs comply with local, state, and federal permitting requirements, industry standards (e.g., BICSI, TIA), and internal company specifications.
  • Coordinate with permitting agencies, utility owners, municipalities, and regulatory bodies to secure necessary approvals.
  • Estimate project costs, materials, and labor requirements; provide input for budgeting and scheduling.
  • Mentor junior engineers and OSP designers by providing technical guidance and best practices.
  • Review as-builts, redlines, and design packages for quality assurance and network record accuracy.
  • Support construction teams during implementation with design clarifications, change orders, and site issue resolution.
  • Participate in technical evaluations of materials, vendor proposals, and new OSP technologies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Planning, Construction, Project Management, and Network Operations.
  • Perform inspections and audits of completed installations to validate design integrity and conformance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in OSP engineering design and telecom infrastructure development
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) seal or stamp required must be eligible to sign and seal engineering plans in applicable states.
  • Expertise in fiber and copper design standards, permitting, and industry best practices
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, GIS tools, and fiber mapping platforms
  • Strong working knowledge of construction methods, municipal codes, and network architecture
  • Certifications such as BICSI RCDD, FOA CFOS/D, or equivalent preferred
