Job Description

- Performs external examinations and autopsies and prepares reports on findings
- Analyzes and interprets data obtained from firearm and toxicology investigations to determine cause and manner of death
- Testifies in local, State and Federal court proceedings as an expert medical witness
- Signs official documents such as death certificates
- Photographs wounds and other physical evidence
- Determines need for odontology and anthropology consultations
- Provides medical information to law enforcement agencies, attorneys, judges, other medical professionals, relatives of deceased, news media, District Attorney's Office and the general public
- Performs related duties as required.
- Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Doctor of Medicine Degree or Doctor of Osteopathy degree.
- 1 year experience in Forensic Pathology which may be an ACGME certified fellowship in Forensic Pathology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of forensic external examinations, autopsies and medical/dental examination and identification procedures.
- Knowledge of trauma origin and natural diseases. Ability to eviscerate and examine organ samples.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to communicate effectively with hostile, abusive or irrational individuals.
- Ability to operate autopsy equipment, microscope, camera, Dictaphone, personal computer and basic office equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, Department Heads, outside organizations, the news media and the general public.
- Must have a valid Texas Medical License or obtain one prior to start date.
- Must be trained in anatomic and forensic pathology in ACGME accredited training programs.
- Must be board eligible or board certified in anatomic and forensic pathology by the American Board of Pathology.
- Must obtain board certification in anatomic pathology within 2 years of start date and certification in forensic pathology within two years of certification in anatomic pathology.
- Required to share call with 4 other staff pathologists. Required to be available 24-hours a day when on call.
STARTING SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications
