Job Description

The Director of Respiratory Therapy provides strategic and operational leadership for Respiratory Therapy services across the MUSC Health Charleston Division, which includes Ashley River Tower Hospital, Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, University Hospital, and the Institute of Psychiatry. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered respiratory care across a range of inpatient and outpatient settings.

In addition to respiratory therapy services, the Director has direct oversight of Pulmonary Function Testing services and dotted-line responsibility for Sleep Services within the Division. The Director is responsible for the development and execution of departmental strategy, service line growth, recruitment and retention efforts, and overall performance in quality, safety, and patient outcomes.

This position leads a team of licensed professionals, support staff, and subordinate managers, overseeing both clinical and operational functions. With significant discretionary and financial authority, the Director manages the planning, execution, and fiscal oversight of key initiatives. The role collaborates closely with department and system leadership to develop and standardize operating procedures, optimize workflows, improve productivity, and align efforts with broader organizational goals.

Additional responsibilities include preparing and contributing to business proposals, SBARs, and presentations to support decision-making and strategic planning across the health system.

The Director is accountable for regulatory and accreditation compliance, departmental policy development, and acts as the primary liaison for Respiratory Therapy services. The role also cultivates strong relationships with senior leaders, administrators, and interdisciplinary teams to drive excellence in clinical care and operational outcomes.

Additional Responsibilities:

Facilitate annual budgeting and resource planning processes

Drive continuous improvement initiatives across all service areas

Develop and enforce departmental policies and procedures

Represent the department in institutional planning and strategy discussions

Support innovation and advancement in respiratory care practices

Prepare business proposals, SBARs, and presentations as needed

Other duties as assigned

Additional Job Description

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field required

Master’s degree preferred; must be obtained within three (3) years of hire

Current licensure and credentials appropriate for respiratory therapy leadership

Demonstrated experience in operational leadership within a complex healthcare environment
