We are building Maven to deliver better, cheaper support, for both end users and agents. With recent advancements in Generative AI, it is now possible to deliver delightful customer experiences at a fraction of today’s cost.

Team:

Maven has assembled a world-class team from Google, Meta, Amazon, and Stripe, and is supported by executives & Advisors from OpenAI, Google, HubSpot, and Stripe.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the strategy, execution, and growth of our backend development team. This role focuses on building the APIs, services, and data flows that power Maven’s AI products. Reporting to the CTO (Sami Shalabi), you will lead multiple teams and their managers, scale people & process, and architect ambitious product goals.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead backend software engineering teams, set clear goals, coach, and raise the execution bar.

  • Define and drive the backend roadmap aligned to product priorities: availability, latency, cost, and developer velocity.

  • Own service and API architecture, implementation, code quality, and operational readiness including observability, on call, and runbooks.

  • Drive initiatives that improve developer productivity and operational excellence.

  • Establish standards for design reviews, incident reviews, performance, and capacity planning.

  • Collaborate closely with product engineering, data, and security teams to ensure seamless integrations and alignment with company objectives.

  • Recruit, level, and grow top engineering talent while building an inclusive, high-ownership culture.

  • Manage budgets, headcount plans, and vendor choices to scale efficiently.

Who You Are:

  • 10+ years in software engineering with some experience leading managers or multi-team groups.

  • Experience scaling backend product teams in a cloud-native environment and shipping customer-facing capabilities at pace.

  • Experience with distributed systems, API design, data stores (SQL and NoSQL), caching, messaging or eventing, and performance tuning.

  • Strong understanding of security, privacy, and compliance for user data.

  • Comfortable with modern cloud (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and CI/CD.

  • Excellent cross-functional communicator with strong product judgment and a metrics mindset.

  • A builder and coach who raises the bar, gives clear feedback, and develops engineers.
