JOB DESCRIPTION
DEPARTMENT: Financial Aid
POSITION TITLE: GUILD Financial Aid Counselor
SUPERVISOR: Assistant Director of Financial Aid
SUMMARY: Within a centralized financial aid services environment, evaluates, approves, and awards financial aid to students in accordance with federal, state, and university regulations, policies, and operating guidelines. Primarily to support students receiving funding through the GUILD program, an employer pay organization that partners with LSU Online Learning and LSU Alexandria. Assesses financial needs of students, and advises students and parents regarding financial aid options, processes, and requirements. Participates as appropriate in systems/procedures planning and management; implements and coordinates specific individual programs and/or assignments, in accordance with the overall objectives of the department.
RESPONSIBILITIES/JOB DUTIES:
- Works in tandem with LSUA Distance Learning to reconcile GUILD awards and learner's additional financial aid.
- Calculates Qualifying grants and appropriate charges for students and communicates changes regularly to Distance Learning for reconciliation
- Monitors schedules of GUILD students and adjusts aid accordingly
- Maintain correspondence to students on processes and timing
- Work with the Accounting services team in regards to coverage and holds.
- Analyzes and evaluates financial viability of students and families, and provides advice and counsel regarding available financial aid opportunities, eligibility requirements, and the application process.
- Reviews and assesses eligibility of applications for financial aid; exercises professional judgment to determine whether adjustments should be made.
- Responds to inquiries and researches and resolves problems related to transactions handled by the unit; serves as liaison with other constituencies in the resolution of day-to-day administrative and operational issues.
- Provide information, in person, on the telephone, and email, to students, prospective students, and families regarding student financial aid.
- Serves as a liaison with state, federal, tribal, and other agencies; keeps abreast of student assistance opportunities and program regulations.
- Assist with the collection, management, and reporting of data in accordance with the objectives of the position; participates in the development and implementation of data management systems and procedures, as appropriate.
- Assist with the implementation, coordination, and possible oversight of one or more specific administrative programs and/or service areas, as assigned.
- Trains and serves as an operational resource to other staff and/or students, as appropriate; may supervise student employees or lower-level staff.
- Assist with workshops and/or presentations to students, parents, and/or other interested parties on financial aid policy and procedural issues.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Assist Departmental staff when needed
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree or at least 3 years financial aid experience
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Working knowledge or better of Microsoft Office Suite
- Proficient knowledge in Excel
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior experience in financial aid
OFFICE HOURS: Eight (8) hours per day, Monday- Friday 40 hours a week. Additional hours worked as needed.
