Job Description

McColm specializes in supporting U.S. federal customers with national security, military, law enforcement, and foreign affairs portfolios by managing bespoke professional training programs, delivering effective education and training support solutions, and providing highly specialized technical assistance and analysis expertise to decision makers.
McColm & Company is seeking 4 qualified STEM Tutors to provide academic tutoring to U.S. Coast Guard Academy cadets. Tutors will support mathematics, data analysis/programming, science (chemistry or physics), and engineering courses for the Fall 2025, Spring 2026, and Summer 2026 semesters. The roles are part-time, Sunday through Thursday evenings (7:00 PM – 10:00 PM), and will be performed onsite in New London, CT. These positions are contingent upon contract award.
Successful candidates will provide individual and group tutoring sessions for undergraduate-level STEM courses, including:
- Mathematics: Pre-Calculus, Calculus I & II, Probability and Statistics (non-calculus based).
- Data Analysis and Computing: Data Visualization, Programming Principles, Tools for Business Intelligence (Python and Microsoft Suite).
- Science: Chemistry I (Fall) and Physics I (Spring).
- Engineering: Statics.

Tutoring Schedule is anticipated to be:
- Fall 2025: Sept 1 – Dec 19 (no tutoring Nov 24–28)
- Spring 2026: Jan 19 – May 7 (no tutoring Mar 7–15)
- Summer 2026: May 11 – July 24 (Mathematics only).
- It is not required that 1 candidate be available to teach full hours for an entire semester. Please indicate your general availability in your application (i.e. unavailable on Tuesdays, pre-planned vacation from Sept 4-10, etc).
Additional Responsibilities include:
- Assist students in understanding course concepts, completing assignments, and preparing for quizzes and exams.
- Maintain detailed attendance records for all tutoring sessions.
- Provide feedback to instructors on student progress and flag at-risk students.
- Ensure continuity of support, coordinating with McColm and USCGA to reschedule or arrange coverage if absent.
- Adhere to all DHS/USCGA site policies, including security, conduct, and identification requirements.
Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred in the subject area tutored (Mathematics, Data Science/Programming, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering).
Experience:
- Minimum 1 year of teaching or tutoring experience in a higher education setting.
Skills:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to explain complex STEM concepts clearly and effectively.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and Python (for data analysis tutors).
Other Requirements:
- Ability to pass a background check and obtain site clearance.
- Ability to perform work on site in New London, CT at US Coast Guard Academy facilities, as required.
- Fluency in English (read, write, speak).
- Professional demeanor, punctuality, and commitment to academic success of cadets.
