JOB TITLE: Lifeguard

JOB SUMMARY: Maintain a safe, hygienic, pleasant environment in the swimming areas. Monitor all activity and conditions for safety hazards, unsafe behavior, and medical emergencies. Take any corrective action required, following established guidelines. Perform the daily required cleaning of pool areas and exercise room, water treatment, and record keeping procedures required.

REPORTS TO: Pool Director

PRIMARY DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS:

  • Watch swimmers and swimming area for safety hazards, unsafe behavior, and medical emergencies. Take any corrective action necessary; follow proper emergency practice if needed.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork, including swimming areas records, guest charges, chemical orders, and maintenance log.
  • Clean all assigned areas: pool area, locker rooms and workout room.
  • Empty wastebaskets.
  • Transport towels to and from the laundry.
  • Clean foyer glass doors.
  • Clean large sliding doors.
  • Clean pool deck.
  • Replenish towels, fruit and water in workout room.
  • Turn on CD music in workout room.
  • Check and maintain water Levels.
  • Check water temperature.
  • Prepare daily pool checklist for resident manager.
  • Maintain equipment in good condition. Observe and report any repair needed on equipment, furniture, fixtures, or building.
  • Issue towels and exercise room keys to guests as needed.
  • Maintain the exercise room equipment, towels, bottled water, fruit, music, and trash.
  • Hold guests valuables such as wallets, watches, cameras.

RESPONSIBLE FOR:

  • Swimmer safety.
  • Secure closing of swimming areas at days end.
  • Keys.
  • Personal uniforms.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be capable of working long shifts, remaining alert despite heat or sunshine. Must be able to monitor activity in swimming area, regardless of number of swimmers. Must have keen eyesight and hearing. Must be in good physical condition, in order to perform efficiently in swimming emergency. Must be able to lift 40 pounds.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Schedule includes weekends and holidays, shift work. Some night work and extended hours may be required. Work takes place in any of the following swimming areas: indoor pool complex, outdoor pool or guest beach.

HAZARDS ENCOUNTERED:

  • Pool chemicals and some cleaning agents and blood borne pathogens are hazardous if improperly handled or if contact with eyes, skin, or clothing occurs.
  • Care should be taken to avoid overexposure to the sun.
  • Injury or double drowning during water rescue attempt.

Requirements

SKILLS REQUIRED: Ability to read, write, and follow and give written or verbal instructions. Proficiency in water safety and CPR procedures.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to read and write English is necessary. Current certification in CPR (cardio-pulmonary-resuscitation, and in lifesaving (water). First aid training is desirable. Water Safety Instructor (WSI) is desirable.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE: Previous life guarding work is preferred; training in other functions can be learned on the job. Beach guarding experience is preferred. Valid life guarding American Red Cross.

SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS: See Skills Required, Educational Requirements. After training, proficiency in procedures for maintaining hygienic water quality.

PERSONALITY REQUIREMENTS: Must be observant and attentive. Must react quickly and appropriately to medical emergencies or unsafe conditions. Must be personable and friendly.
