The SCA’s Architecture and Engineering Department is responsible for development of scope, design, and construction documents for new school buildings, additions, lease conversions and renovation work of existing schools for New York City’s approximately 1.1 million students. Our projects are intentionally and thoughtfully designed; positive impact design is at the forefront of all our projects.

Our In-House studio is a multidisciplinary practice that is responsible for designing some of the largest and most complex schools in our 1,500+ school portfolio as well as renovation work to existing schools. Our other two studios manage external consultants from design inception to completion.  Our three studios are comprised of talented architects and engineers who are driven to deliver high quality custom designed, sustainable, and resilient public schools.

Engineer-A

Responsibleforperformingworkinavarietyofassignmentsandtechnicalroles,asneeded.

Provideoverallcoordinationforin-housedesignprojects.

Performand/orsupervisesthepreparationofscope,pre-schematic,schematic,preliminaryand construction documents including reports, calculations, drawings, and specifications.

Workwithawiderangeoftechnical,professional,managerialandsupportpersonnelaswellasoutside consultants, contractors, vendors, and various government agencies.

MayfunctionasaprojectleaderreportingtoanEngineer/ArchitectBorEngineer/ArchitectC,Managing Architect, Managing Engineer, or Director to plan and coordinate work with other Engineers and Architects.

MaydirectAssociateEngineers/ArchitectsandArchitectural/EngineeringTechnicians,and/orTechnical Inspectors working on several less complex design and construction projects, such as new schools, modernizations, additions, leased space, and Capital Improvement Projects (CIP).

Engineer- B

Engineer B may supervise lower-level Architects and Engineers, Technical Inspectors, Quality Assurance Specialists,AssociateArchitectsandAssociateEngineers,andArchitectural/EngineeringTechnicians.

Work on several more complex design projects such as large primary schools, small intermediate schools,specialtypesofbuildings(e.g.,specialeducationschools),fullmodernizations,largeadditions, and specialized and/or numerous CIP projects.

Mayactasadisciplineleaderinadepartmenttotrainanddevelopinternalstaffinthearchitectural discipline.

Maychairorparticipateindepartmentseminarsandworkshops.

Providesmentoringforprofessionaldevelopmentoflowerlevelemployees.

TrainsnewSCAemployeesandcontingentstaff,aswellasoutsidedesignconsultants,onSCA standards and procedures.

Maycoordinatetheworkofconsultingfirmsand/orindividualconsultantsandcontingentstaffonprojects and does design review of outside consultants.

Performsrelatedtasks.

PerformsthedutiesofArchitect-Awhennecessary.

Engineer C

Engineer-Cisresponsibleforperformingworkinavarietyofassignmentsandtechnicalroles,as needed, and manages team members and/or contractors on projects to achieve the objectives of the Authority.

Worksasaprojectleaderonmultiple,complexconstructionprojectsandmajordesignandexploration programs to plan, assign, direct, manage, and supervise the work of stakeholders such as Engineers, Architects, Quality Assurance Specialists, Technical Inspectors, Associate Engineers, Associate Architects, and Architectural/Engineering Technicians, resolving any problems that occur.

Managesmultipleprojectssimultaneously.

Ensurescompliancetocodes,standards,andthattheprojectiscompletedonschedule.

Performsdesignreviewofworkpreparedbyotherengineers/architects.

Assistsinpreparingnewdesignstandardsandprocedures.

Maycoordinatetheworkofconsultingfirmsand/orindividualconsultantsandcontingentstaffonprojects.

MinimumQualifications

Needed Specialty: Structural Engineers/ Civil Engineers with structural major

Baccalaureate Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an accredited university/college plus:

LevelArequires:AvalidNewYorkStatelicenseasaProfessionalEngineer.

LevelBrequires:AvalidNewYorkStatelicenseasaProfessionalEngineerandthreeyearsoffull-time, paid post-licensure experience as a Professional Engineer; two years must be as a project engineer; project team, or squad leader

LevelCrequires:AvalidNewYorkStatelicenseasaProfessionalEngineerandsixyearsoffull-time, paidpost-licensureexperienceasaProfessionalEngineer;threeyearsmustbeasaprojectengineer; project, team, or squad leader; or a comparable level of responsibility.

CurrentNewYorkStateProfessionalEngineerlicensemustbemaintainedforthedurationofemployment for all levels.

 Incumbent Rate: $114,335 - $161,531

Subject to the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the appointment rate for any newly hired employee, or employees with less than two years of active City or SCA service, shall be 15% less than the applicable incumbent rate or step.

Plumbing and Drainage: a minimum of four years of experience specializing in plumbing and drainage work; this can be any combination of pre-licensure and post-licensure work; post-licensure work is not required. Structural: a minimum of four years of experience specializing in structural work; this can be any combination of pre-licensure and post-licensure work; post-licensure work is not required.
