Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) primary responsibilities include the development and administration of plant-wide safety and occupational health related functions pertaining to the facility. These functions include, but are not limited to, creating and maintaining a safe place to work, safeguarding company property, , the formation and operation of safety committees, supervision of employee safety training programs and accident investigation procedures. This position coordinates with outside safety and health agencies and maintains compliance with Fed and Cal-OSHA, local, state, and federal safety and health requirements, conducts quarterly audits, and administers workers' compensation activities between employees and health care professionals.

All employees are responsible for following the protocols of Food Safety.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement health and safety programs and policies
  • Be the leader of the Safety Committee, and all Occupational Safety Programs and Policies.
  • Perform routine walkthrough inspections of facilities to assure compliance with safety standards.
  • Assure compliance with Fed and Cal OSHA.
  • Lead accident investigation process by investigating job-related injuries/incidents to determine root causes
  • Comply with insurance recommendations regarding reduction in workforce injury rates, oversee corrective actions, and implement preventive measures.
  • Provide ongoing Safety Training to all employees on safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Maintain and update safety documentation and records
  • Ensure training materials are current and comply with OSHA requirements.
  • Ensure training and documentation are maintained with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Reduce worker compensation costs by coordinating safety inspections, performing accident & near miss investigations, and ensuring corrective action is taken.
  • Ensure OSHA compliance and updates OSHA 300 logs
  • Manage Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal-OSHA) inspections, providing inspectors with appropriate documents and identifying safety measures.
  • 'On the Floor' presence on all shifts.
  • 'Hands-on' liaison with Maintenance and Sanitation as it relates to Safety of Personnel and Equipment.
  • Advise management and Human Resources on the status of investigations, any ongoing issues, and give recommendations for corrective action, including additional safety training.
  • Develop and implement record-keeping and investigation procedures for occupational injuries/illness.
  • Fully responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining emergency preparedness.
  • Develop as needed safety/health policies to ensure compliance with state, federal, and corporate policies.
  • Oversee corrective actions and implement preventive measures. Follows up on safety improvements.
  • Monitor the removal of physical, biological, and chemical hazards.
  • Verify compliance with health and safety regulations and ensure all necessary records are maintained and prepared according to established guidelines.
  • Ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Work with departmental heads to address safety issues as they arise.
  • Perform area-specific hazardous analysis.
  • Implement and manage the employee safety incentive program.
  • Audit outside contractor activity.
  • Monitor employee's restrictions due to work-related injury or illness and that employees are working within those restrictions.
  • Must be capable of and willing to respond to emergencies during off shifts, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Manage waste disposal and pollution control programs
  • Stay current with changes in environmental health and safety regulations
  • Promote a culture of safety and environmental awareness
  • Maintain confidentiality on sensitive issues.

Supervisor Responsibility:

  • Guide, motivate, and develop staff.
  • Monitor and evaluate job performance of direct reports on all shifts. Deficiencies must be addressed and corrective action, including progressive disciplinary procedures, must be taken if necessary.
  • Make the company's values and management principles live in the department(s).
  • Participate in and support company-sponsored initiatives such as Quality, HACCP, Lean Manufacturing, Employee Safety and Production systems.

Work Environment:

  • The employee will work in all areas of the facility including the Operations Departments, Offices, Common Areas, Outside Perimeter, Parking, and Yard. The plant environment will include wet or humid conditions, cold and heat, and working near moving mechanical parts.
  • Noise levels in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when in the production areas.

Physical Demands:

  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; move for long periods; sit; use the computer; type; talk; and hear.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position. Standard days and hours of work are Monday - Friday.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCES

  • Minimum of 4 years of safety management experience in a large food manufacturing environment.
  • Associate degree or higher, with training in Criminal Justice, Security Management, Crime Prevention, or related fields. BA/BS degree in a related field preferred.
  • Must have a strong working knowledge of federal and state safety laws/regulations.
  • Requires training in OSHA &/or Cal-OSHA, Adult CPR, and Standard First Aid.
  • Completion of Blood Borne Pathogen Training.
  • Excellent verbal, written and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to read, write, & speak English & Spanish.
  • Must have proficient computer skills to perform required duties (ex: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail).
  • Ability to identify safety concerns and perform job safety analysis.
