Group Director, Safety Summary
In this pivotal leadership role, the Group Director of Safety will drive safety strategy and execution across a network of specialized flatbed and heavy-haul carriers. Acting as a servant leader, this individual provides the structure, training, and high-level guidance needed to build world-class safety programs that protect lives, ensure compliance, and fuel operational excellence. Success demands a rare blend of strategic vision, boots-on-the-ground leadership, and expert-level industry insight — uniting executive teams and frontline operators under one clear, uncompromising safety mission.
Your Responsibilities
- Safety Leadership // Serves as a leader to a group of operating companies by providing clear and effective leadership and leadership directives to local directors.
- Safety Strategy // Oversees and implements the organization's procedures and polices to each business unit.
- Risk Assessment // Reviews relevant data from internal and external resources to identify risks develop plans to overcome the issues.
- Training Development // Guides the development of training to ensure movement towards common safety best practices to improve the organization's safety atmosphere.
- Key Performance Indicator Development // Develops, implements, and tracks key performance indicators (KPIs) to establish benchmarks for success.
- Accident, Incident, and Claims Reporting // Ensures that localized safety functions follow the guidance for reporting accidents, claims, and incidents that meet established criteria; furthermore, the incumbent must report any qualifying accidents, claims, and incidents to the executive leadership at the group level. Finally, one must evaluate trends and create appropriate action items to change the trends and drive operational improvements.
- Safety Metrics // Maintain an expert level working knowledge of the metrics within safety, including published scores such as the CSA scores or scores that impact the company's safety rating; furthermore, you must also develop and maintain an expert level understanding of the group's self-determined safety metrics.
- Relationship Development // Develop and foster strong working relationships with key internal departments and external entities such as vendors, legal entities, or government agencies.
- Safety Laws and Regulations // Develop and maintain an active working knowledge of the safety laws and regulations, both current and upcoming, that will impact the group's safety plan.
- Accident Investigations // Lead and when necessary, participate in thorough and complete investigations of internal and external claims, incidents, injuries, and accidents.
- Root Cause Analysis // The incumbent in this role must be able to review, process, and understand the cause of a given safety issue to assist in identifying systemic issues and preventing repeat issues.

- Strategy Development // One must possess the ability to create effective strategies that drive targeted results while efficiently using resources.
- Cost Management // Demonstrable experience in a position where one's ability to effectively manage costs impacted the organization's bottom line.
- Time Management // Proven ability to manage one's own time in a highly dynamic environment where certain situations are time and safety-sensitive.
- Prioritization and Re-Prioritization // Experienced in an environment where the ability to prioritize incoming tasks and information, with the ability to adapt and re-prioritize, was mission critical.
- Presentation Skills // Experienced in creating and leading substantive and effective presentations to large and small groups of varying seniority.
- Data Analysis // Demonstrable experience analyzing data while having the ability to understand the story behind the data and articulate it.
- Conflict Resolution // Experience resolving a diverse array of conflicts effectively and efficiently is crucial.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, safety engineering, transportation management, business administration, or related field; plus, six (6) years of safety operations experience in a DOT-regulated environment, including five (5) years in a supervisory role—equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in occupational health and safety, safety engineering, transportation management, business administration, or related field; plus, eight (8) years of safety operations experience in a DOT-regulated environment, including five (5) years in a supervisory role—equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
Salary and Schedule
- Salary // The salary will be commensurate with experience.
- Schedule // Full-Time; On-Site; Some travel is required.
