Job Description
JOB OVERVIEW:
The Head Coach of the MLS NEXT Pro team is responsible for leading the development and competitive performance of the club's second team. As a key component of the club's player development pathway towards the first team. The Head Coach will foster a high-performance environment that aligns with the club's curriculum, playing philosophy, values, and long-term goals. This role requires a proven ability to develop young talent, follow a cohesive game model in place, and collaborate effectively across departments, particularly with the first team, U18, and U16 teams.
INDIVIDUAL WORK:
Plan and execute daily training sessions aligned with the club's curriculum and philosophy. Lead match-day decisions including team selection, tactics, substitutions, and post-match evaluations. Analyze individual player performance using video and data tools to guide development. Promote a culture of professionalism, discipline, and accountability within the team. Stay current with coaching methodologies, trends, and league developments. Ensure compliance with MLS NEXT Pro rules, health and safety protocols, and club policies.
TEAM-WORK:
Work with the IDP coach and Director of Methodology to develop and maintain individual development plans (IDPs) for each player. Coordinate with the Director of Methodology and scouting staff to evaluate and integrate youth prospects into the MLS NEXT Pro environment. Lead and manage assistant coaches, performance staff, and team support staff in daily operations. Work closely with the First Team and Academy coaching staff to facilitate the player development pathways. Collaborate with the Director of Methodology, Performance, Medical, and Scouting departments to support holistic player development. Contribute to club-wide technical meetings and performance reviews. Participate in talent identification and recruitment decisions in conjunction with the technical leadership. Engage with player families and other support networks as needed to foster development and professionalism.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
USSF "A" License or equivalent required. Minimum 5 years of professional coaching experience, preferably with experience at the youth, reserve, or professional levels. Demonstrated track record of player development and progression to higher levels. Strong tactical knowledge and ability to teach and adapt game models. Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required. Experience with performance analysis tools and data-driven decision making, such as SportsCode. Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel as required.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Experience working within an MLS or similar professional club structure. Background in managing diverse rosters with players from varied backgrounds and cultures. Familiarity with MLS roster and player development rules and structures. Understanding of sports science principles and integration into training.
