Job Description

Tutor (In-person)

GO Tutor Corps in partnership with AmeriCorps

Available  Location(s):

  • Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB School - 1501 Cameron St, Alexandria, VA 22314
  • William Ramsay Elementary School - 5700 Sanger Ave, Alexandria, VA 22311

Hours Commitment: Approximately 10 hours per week

Schedule: Varies and depends on school and grade level, see more below

Start Date: Training will begin in January. The semester starts on February 2nd and ends on May 14th.

Position Summary

As a GO Tutor, you will provide small groups of students with individualized instruction, mentorship, and enrichment opportunities each week in a 100-hour AmeriCorps service position. You will support groups of students in grades K-8 in person, averaging 10 hours per week, following one of the schedules below:

  • Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB School: Tuesday through Thursday
    • Elementary School
      • 8:00am- 11:00am (5th grade)
      • 11:00am- 2:00pm (4th grade)
    • Middle School
      • 1:30pm- 4:30pm (6th, 7th & 8th grades)
  • William Ramsay Elementary School
    • Literacy - Monday through Friday
      • 9:30am- 11:30am (3rd & 4th grade)
      • 12:30pm- 2:30pm (1st grade)
      • 1:30pm- 3:30pm (2nd & 5th grades)
    • Math
      • 8:30am- 10:30am, Monday through Friday (4th & 5th grades)
      • 1:15pm- 4:15pm, Tuesday through Thursday (3rd grade)

During your service with GO, you’ll develop both professional and personal skills that will serve you well beyond your time in the program. As a GO Tutor Corps member, you will serve at either William Ramsay Elementary School or Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB School in Alexandria, Virginia—institutions that share our mission and values.

AmeriCorps Living Allowance

The AmeriCorps Living Allowance and the number of pay cycles may vary depending on your assigned start date and location. As a baseline, the pre-tax AmeriCorps Living Allowance set by the federal AmeriCorps program is $1,800 for 100-hour AmeriCorps tutors who have completed the onboarding process and commenced accruing service hours for all pay cycles. The estimated pre-tax living allowance typically falls within the range of $200 to $257 in biweekly payments. Please note that the precise living allowance total and bi-weekly payment details will be clearly outlined in your offer letter and/or during the onboarding process.

Key Responsibilities

Academic Tutoring - GO Tutors work with small groups of students to increase their achievement in Math and English Language Arts (ELA). You’ll be matched with consistent groups of students to support throughout the semester. You’ll receive lesson materials in advance and will be responsible for dedicating time to prepare yourself for each lesson.

Mentoring & Enrichment - GO Tutors serve as mentors to their students, supporting their social and emotional development by building authentic and healthy relationships and setting goals for the future.

Qualifications

You are qualified to apply if you meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum of an Associate’s degree or current enrollment in an accredited college or university program
  • Citizenship or legal Permanent Residency status in the United States (AmeriCorps requirement)
  • Served no more than three previous AmeriCorps service terms (AmeriCorps requirement)
  • At least 18 years of age

  • Able to travel to Swanson Middle School 4 days/week at the exact times listed above (transportation not included)
  • Passion for service and a growth mindset

  • Belief that all students can succeed
  • Confidence in your ability to lead students to significant academic growth in Math and/or ELA
  • Experience working in team settings- relationship building and communication skills 
  • Maturity to work closely with professional peers
  • Ability to stay organized and meet deadlines
  • Ability to respond well to and implement feedback- commitment to lifelong learning
  • Collaborative problem-solving abilities
  • Prior experience working or volunteering with children is a plus

The Teacher Residency is a pathway to teaching created for GO tutors. If you are successful as a tutor and interested in becoming a certified teacher, GO will help. More information will be shared with you once you begin tutoring.
