A Brief Overview
Compile, process, maintain, and release patient health information (medical records) of health system patients in a manner consistent with administrative, legal, and regulatory requirements of the health care system. Process, maintain, compile, and report patient information for health data requirements and regulatory standards.
What you will do
- Compiles, audits, and maintains patients' protected health information for completeness and accuracy within the patient medical record.
- Protect the security of medical records to ensure that confidentiality is maintained.
- Release of information according to governmental regulation and health system policies and procedures.
- Receive and screen telephone calls.
- Perform data entry and data retrieval services, providing data for inclusion in medical records and for transmission to physicians.
- Plan, develop, maintain and operationalize a variety of health record indexes and storage and retrieval systems to collect, classify, store, retrieve, and analyze information.
- Prepare statistical reports, narrative reports, correspondence and graphic presentations of information such as birth certificate registry data for use by hospital staff, researchers, or other users.
- Recommends improvement to health information management processes
Qualifications:
Qualifications
- H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) Required
- HIM degree from an accredited college Preferred
- 1-3 years Personal computer experience Required
- 1-3 years Microsoft Office experience Preferred
- 1-3 years Healthcare experience Preferred
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of information, most importantly patient financial and health record information in accordance with federal and state laws and regulations
- Knowledge of general office practices and procedures
- Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Knowledge of computer hardware and software, including applications.
- Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
- Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
- Managing one's own time and the time of others.

- Ability to understand and respond appropriately, effectively and sensitively to special population groups as defined by race, ethnicity, language, age, sexual orientation, etc.
- Ability to see well enough to use computer efficiently and read computer reports and correspondence
- Utilizes knowledge of general office procedures and functions of a health center to create efficient, positive work environment
- Willingness to learn new skills and continuously improve knowledge, skills and abilities
- Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with others.
- Must be organized and demonstrate the ability to follow guidelines.
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) (United States of America) Preferred or
- Certified Medical Assistant American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) (United States of America) Preferred
