ABOUT CARMEN 

Carmen Schools of Science & Technology (Carmen) is a public charter school network in Milwaukee, WI with a mission to graduate all students as critical thinkers and self-directed learners prepared for success in college, meaningful careers, community involvement, and family life.  The Carmen Schools network includes five schools with 1,900 students in grades 6th– 12th.

POSITION SUMMARY 

Carmen Schools seeks a Human Resources Intern who is eager to gain hands-on experience and provide meaningful support to Carmen's talent and human resources operations. This internship is ideal for a college student with an interest in Human Resources who is looking to develop practical skills in recruiting, onboarding, and day-to-day HR operations within an educational organization.

The HR Intern will work closely with the Human Resources team to support a variety of talent and HR initiatives, including recruitment, employee onboarding, data management, and administrative projects. This position offers exposure to multiple facets of HR while contributing to Carmen's mission and organizational success.

Pay:  $18-$20 an hour 

Schedule & Commitment

  • January–May: 15–25 hours per week
  • June–August: Full-time, 40 hours per week

QUALIFICATION 

  • Currently enrolled in a 4-year accredited university, preferably pursuing a degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, Education, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in Human Resources and talent development.
  • Commitment to Carmen's mission and values, Growth Belief and Empathy. 
  • Interest in education and supporting careers in teaching and school-based professions.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); familiarity with applicant tracking systems is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Reliable transportation to travel to campuses and off-site events, as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONISBLITES 

  • Assist with talent recruitment efforts, including job postings, outreach, and applicant communications.
  • Support the coordination and participation in career fairs, hiring events, and recruitment activities.
  • Assist with applicant tracking system (ATS) data entry, updates, and maintenance.
  • Support pre-screening of candidates and scheduling interviews.
  • Assist with background checks, reference checks, and employment verifications.
  • Support new employee onboarding activities, including orientation preparation and documentation.
  • Assist with maintaining employee records and personnel files in compliance with HR requirements.
  • Provide administrative support for HR processes, reports, and projects.
  • Assist with benefits administration support and basic HR policy questions under supervision.
  • Support payroll-related tasks and data verification, as needed.
  • Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.

WORKPLACE ENVIROMENT 

The position will work predominantly Monday – Friday at the network office with some travel to individual campuses and occasional travel for recruitment events. 

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS 

This internship is a paid position with compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications. Interns will gain valuable professional experience, mentorship, and exposure to HR practices within a dynamic educational organization. $18-$20 an hour.
