The Instructor, Light Rail Transportation prepares and delivers technical training and instruction for train operators, Field/Division Supervisors and Controllers and employees that are directly connected to the movement of Light Rail Vehicles in accordance with established Light Rail practices and safety standards. Develops and maintains a quality assurance program for Light Rail Transportation Training, including continuation and developmental courses as defined by the Manager, LRV Operator Training. This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to the provisions of the RTD Drug and Alcohol Policy.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential:

  • Conducts and develops new employee training and certification programs.
  • Designs, reviews, and conducts specialized training courses on special activities related to the alignment and addressing specific development concerns.
  • Facilitates courses to meet needs, assesses success of training, and recommends modifications as needed.
  • Schedules work assignments, shifts, and training classes and maintains accurate training reports and logs.
  • Develops and maintains standards and procedures to ensure the safe operation of Light Rail vehicles and integrates training and quality assurance procedures into the Light Rail Transportation culture.
  • Prepares troubleshooting and operating procedures for Light Rail Operators.
  • Coordinates, develops, revises, and administers qualifications, certifications, and re-certification testing of current and potential employees.
  • May facilitate training on Light Rail Vehicles within the railroad right of way.

  • Performs all other job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • A minimum of two (2) years as a full-time Certified Train Operator/Engineer, Conductor, Dispatcher/Controller or any combination of Train Operator/Engineer, Conductor, Controller/Dispatcher and one year Supervisor experience. Certified Train Operator is preferred.
  • A minimum of one year of experience developing and facilitating training classes is preferred.
  • Valid Colorado Driver's License, or ability to obtain one within 30-days. No DUI, DWI or reckless driving in the past five years.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification as a Light Rail Vehicle Operator.
  • Proficiency in LRT operations and procedures.
  • Possess a DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate and then maintain a current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate thereafter.
  • Ability to maintain a high-performance level of dependability, reliability and safety.
  • Ability to obtain a LRT Controller certification.
  • Ability to obtain a Field Supervisor certification.
  • Ability to obtain a LRT Division Supervisor certification.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written means.
  • Ability to use sound judgment.
  • Ability to manage time and workload effectively, which includes planning, organizing, and prioritizing with attention to details.
  • Ability to work various shifts and locations, as assigned.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

The work environment and physical demands described here are representative of those required by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Demonstrated physical ability to perform job duties to include throwing rail switches, accessing and operating Light Rail vehicles, operating accessibility ramp, coupling/uncoupling LRVs, and raising/lowering LRV pantograph.
  • Demonstrated ability to push/pull up to 125 pounds and lift/carry up to 60 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to walk on track ballast, on uneven ground, sit for an extended period of time, and work in various outdoor weather.

$65,177.00 - $92,062.25 Annual
