Job Description:
The employee will work with the research and clinical technical staff to complete procedures with various research protocols within the Equine Health Studies Program (EHSP). The purpose of this position is to learn how to perform research projects, document and present data collected. In addition, this position will provide medical oversight for the resident EHSP herd.
Job Responsibilities:
- 75% The employee will be responsible for complete examinations of the horses for enrollment into research studies, including physical examinations, lameness examinations, force plate analysis, treadmill evaluations, endoscopic evaluations, and clinical observations. The employee will be responsible for keeping the research books up-to-date, entering data in a timely fashion and communicating to the research manager.
- 25% The employee will monitor and provide medical services (diagnosis and treatment) to horses in the EHSP Research herd and remote facilities. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
DVM or equivalent and two (2) years of experience
Specific Experience: One (1) year of clinical equine experience
Minimum Certifications:
State Faculty License to practice veterinary medicine
Preferred Qualifications:
DVM degree with three (3) year residency in equine surgery
Specific experience: Rotating Internship
Special or Physical Qualifications:
Per PS-18, employee may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure.
Required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Required to be capable of more than 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, grasping, crawling, twisting, squatting climbing, sitting, and/or bending.
Due to the nature of the position and/or position responsibilities, this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67.
FERPA- As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
