DEPARTMENTAL SUMMARY:

The Laboratory Departments provide many services to our multi-hospital organization and outreach community including: blood collection, processing, testing, and reporting of results, spanning all disciplines of laboratory medicine.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Provides on-site leadership and lab operations oversight during the weekend, evening or night shift hours. Serves as a resource to all laboratory operations across the System. Will also perform all duties and responsibilities as a Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist, carrying a full MT/MLS work assignment.

This position does not directly manage other caregivers, however may be asked to review and provide feedback on the work of other caregivers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

Provides leadership and oversees lab operations during the weekend, evening or night shift hours, including management of scheduling, preparation of required reports and immediate, on-site problem resolution.

Serves as an on-site resource to technical and non-technical laboratory staff and to clinicians throughout the System. Provides technical consultation in support of all laboratory operations across the System.

Maintains standards that insure a safe working environment, intervening immediately if necessary to assure the safety of patients and caregivers.

Appropriately addresses operational and staffing issues in the moment and communicates actions taken to the supervisor, manager or director in a timely manner.

Appropriately refers unresolved or partially resolved issues that are beyond scope of practice or authority to act to appropriate leadership.

Carries an assignment and performs all of the duties of a Medical Technologist (see Medical Technologist job description).

May be assigned responsibility for general scheduling of technical staff.

EDUCATION:

Required: Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science from an accredited college or university required.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:

Required: Current national certification or licensure at the Technologist/Scientist level by one or more of the following accredited credentialing agencies: ASCP, AMT, AAB, HEW, California Department of Health Services. Acceptable credentials: MLS (ASCP), MT (ASCP), BB (ASCP), H (ASCP), C (ASCP), M (ASCP), MB (ASCP), SBB (ASCP), SC (ASCP) , SM (ASCP), MT (AMT), MT (HEW), MT (AAB), CLS.

EXPERIENCE:

Required: 3 years of clinical laboratory experience in a high-complexity setting required.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:

Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Continually (75% or more): Standing and walking, use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level.

Frequently (50%): Sitting, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 1-25 pounds. Keyboard operation (Technical Coordinators and Blood Bank Technical Lab Assistants)

Occasionally (25%): Bending, stooping/kneeling/crouching, climbing ladder/step-stool (varies by area), reaching overhead, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 25-50 pounds, grasping/squeezing, ability to hear whispered speech level.

Rarely (10%): Climbing stairs.

Exposure to Elemental Factors
