Job Description Summary:
The Harford County Sheriff's Office is seeking to establish an eligibility list for the position of Deputy (Law Enforcement), lateral transfer.Probationary employee who is responsible to deliver law enforcement services throughout the County; patrol County to maintain law and order; respond to calls for service; execute arrests; respond to reports of criminal complaints and make necessary investigations; deliver personal service upon inhabitants of the County of civil process issued out of Harford County courts; executes by arrest all warrants issued; perform other duties as assigned.Starting salary is $35.16 per hour/$73,133 annual. Position is entitled to a $10,000 recruitment incentive payment upon hiring and completion of required field training program.The Law Enforcement Deputy position has opportunities for overtime, compensatory time, holiday pay, shift differential for evening and midnight shifts and uniform allowance.This is not an entry-level position. Candidates must possess law enforcement certification through the Maryland Police & Correctional Training Commission and be in good standing.Job Description:
Essential Duties:
Patrol the County to maintain law and order.
Respond to calls for service.
Execute on-view arrests.
Check County businesses for security.
Respond to reports of criminal complaints and makes necessary investigations.
Deliver personal service upon inhabitants of the County of civil process issued out of Circuit and District Court of Harford County and also those civil papers forwarded from other jurisdictions within the state and out of state.
Execute by arrests all warrants issued.
Transport prisoners to and from penal institutions and courts in and out of Harford County.
Maintain courtroom decorum during criminal trials and juvenile proceedings.
Perform other job related duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to act as a representative of the Sheriff's Office to the public.
Ability to obtain a working knowledge of Annotated Code of Maryland, Harford County Ordinances, Uniform Traffic Code, Harford County Sheriff's Office Rules and Regulations, Harford County Government resources, state and federal agencies, District Court Commissioner system, Circuit and Juvenile Court processes, and Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.
Ability to become skilled in the use of firearms, defensive driving, and self-defense techniques.
Ability to complete Firearms Qualifications, Physical Training, Academic Standards, and other training by the Sheriff's Office.
Ability to testify in court.
Knowledge of problem solving techniques, grammar, spelling, arithmetic, and verbal and non-verbal communication
Selected Candidate:
Must possess current law enforcement certification through the Maryland Police & Correctional Training Commission and be in good standing not requiring comparative compliance
Must be 21 years of age or older and a U.S. citizen with 10 years of verifiable US residency.
Must have a high school recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education OR possession of a GED certificate recognized by the Maryland Board of Education.
Must have a valid Class D or Class C non-commercial driver's license with no more than three (3) points and a relatively clean driving record with no convictions for DUI or DWI, including Probation Before Judgment.
Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check (cannot have any criminal convictions on record); medical exam and drug/alcohol screening; polygraph exam; and psychological screening.
Must provide handwriting sample for review.
Must appear before and receive a favorable recommendation from Oral Interview Board.
Visible tattoos are permitted if they are not offensive, indecent, extremist, racist or sexist. No visible tattoos will be permitted on the face or head.
Must possess a history and exhibit the characteristics of honesty, reliability, integrity, and interpersonal skills. Any criminal conviction(s) and/or arrest(s) may be grounds for disqualification.
