Job Description

Our client, the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, has a rare opening for a MakerStudio Specialist!

The MakerStudio Specialist leads the charge in coordinating, programming, and training for the vibrant MakerStudio spaces at our Zionsville, Whitestown, and mobile branches. From 3D printing to robotics, crafting to coding, the MakerStudio Specialist will be the spark that fuels imagination and brings ideas to life in our community.

Team members are assigned a “primary library location” to provide consistency for their day-to-day work-life. There will be times when team members are asked to assist at their non-primary location or at community events. This position's assigned primary library location is at the Zionsville Library.

Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Provides excellent customer service and cultivates a patron-focused culture within the library.
  • Leads the management of the MakerStudios, coordinating reservations, programs, and the public service schedule in conjunction with the MakerStudio Specialist at the Whitestown branch.
  • Partners with various Library departments to identify development opportunities and tie-ins to broader programming plans.
  • Assists patrons of all ages in using tools, equipment, materials, and software in the MakerStudios.
  • Offers patrons one-on-one instruction and training on MakerStudio resources.
  • Maintains a safe and user-friendly environment within the MakerStudios.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of innovative programming.
  • Develops, provides, and/or supports age-appropriate STEAM-related programs both on and off-site.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with community members and organizations that may offer or promote programs related to the MakerStudio.
  • Keeps knowledge current of collection, events, and processes in all areas of the Library.
  • Resolves patron complaints/issues.
  • Markets library materials, collections, and services.
  • Prepares and monitors monthly, quarterly and annual statistics relating to the MakerStudio and writes/inputs the Zionsville MakerStudio update for the monthly director's report.
  • Assists with the development of Library-wide training and events.
  • Creates standard operating procedures.
  • Prepares grant requests and tracks MakerStudio grant spending.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Organizational Support:

  • Adds value as a key department specialist in the Library; understands the profession, service recipients, organization, and its strategy.
  • Assists with educating the public of the availability of all services and programming.
  • Provides support and coverage for coworkers.
  • Works with the management team to update and develop policies and procedures.
  • Organizes and attends various Library committee and manager meetings to facilitate communication and cooperation throughout the Library.
  • Monitors the department budget and purchases to ensure the department stays within guidelines.
  • Provides input to the Executive Director on the budgetary needs of the MakerStudio.
  • Maintains the MakerStudio budget with the Executive Director and Finance Department.
  • Participates in the ongoing development, implementation and evaluation of the Library's Strategic plan.

Professional Development:

  • Develops and maintains in-depth product knowledge regarding tools, equipment, materials, and software available in the MakerStudios.
  • Participates in professional conferences, workshops, and training opportunities.
  • Reads professional journals, blogs, and library-related professional literature and listservs.
  • Maintains local, regional, and national connections in the Maker Movement to learn and grow as well as share information about the activities of the HMMPL MakerStudios.

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree, preferably in education or the STEAM field.
  • Required: Proficiency in Windows, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher), and MAC Office Suite.
  • Required: The ability to quickly learn and/or adapt to new software and technology.
  • Preferred: Minimum of three years of instructional or programming experience

Physical Demands:

  • Rarely: climbing, crawling, sitting for extended periods.
  • Occasionally: driving, lifting items 15-20 lbs.
  • Frequently: reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, standing, sitting, walking, squatting, bending, pushing, and pulling.
