Job Summary

UCSF's Enterprise Strategy & Transformation (EST) seeks an exceptional professional to join our highly skilled and engaged team providing internal consulting services to our dynamic, mission-driven institution. The Organizational Development Manager leads a team of consultants providing expert coaching, training, and consulting on Lean continuous improvement implementation, in addition to strategic planning, project management, and change management. The EST staff enjoy challenging and impactful project work, professional development opportunities, and an engaging hybrid work environment.

The EST Managing Consultant is a key leader in the EST and provides consulting services directly to clients in addition to managing a team of consultants. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leadership & Team Development: Provide strategic leadership for the department, advancing a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. Mentor and manage professional-level staff, ensuring quality and alignment of consulting engagements and deliverables.
  • Process & Technology Transformation: Lead major process redesigns and support enterprise technology rollouts. Establish quality standards, orchestrate system integration, ensure adoption across units, and embed continuous improvement standards into operations.
  • Consulting & Client Engagement: Provide expert consultation to internal clients, understanding their needs and goals, and developing tailored engagement plans to achieve desired outcomes. Facilitate group sessions, manage projects, and deliver solutions that align with institutional values.
  • Portfolio & Program Management: Lead complex projects or small programs, establishing governance standards and mentoring project managers while ensuring disciplined risk management, compliance, and quality across multiple workstreams. Implement program-level cadence, controls, and reporting, and shape cross-project critical paths and dependencies.
  • Establish objectives and determine how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. Provide guidance to subordinates within the latitude of established organization policies.
  • Participate as a member of the EST leadership team. Assist with establishing goals, objectives, and practices in support of organizational effectiveness.
  • AI Integration: Recognize AI as a key multiplier for organizational effectiveness. Leverage AI strategically to coordinate data, synthesize complex inputs, generate options, and inform decisions. Enable teams to improve outcomes by embedding AI into cross-functional processes.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $180,000- $240,000 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Organizational Change, Business Administration or related area, and 10+ years relevant experience and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Thorough knowledge of the management consulting field, theories, models to assess, design and implement customized organizational interventions. Demonstrates superior strategic- thinking and consulting skills in guiding the organization toward workable strategies and solutions.
  • Demonstrates leadership and management skills required to lead subordinates, in the areas of staff performance and development, team building and communications, resolution of issues and conflicts, review and approval of work, and hiring and training employees.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate with a high degree of diplomacy, influential and interpersonal skills to work effectively across the organization at all levels.
  • Able to interpret and communicate, both verbally and in writing, complex information in a clear and concise manner. Have superior written, verbal and presentation skills for influencing and facilitating sustained change.
  • Ability to effectively lead highly significant engagements from inception to conclusion. Ability to conceptualize projects, write proposals and draft project plans and budgets. Advanced knowledge of project management principals, theories and concepts.
  • Demonstrates ability to learn quickly, reason, synthesize and generalize based on information obtained. Sound judgment, ability to draw unbiased conclusions.
  • Ability to establish and manage project governance groups. Excellent facilitation skills and ability to facilitate complex and controversial topics.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Business Administration (MBA) or related area
  • Knowledge of the organizational environment of higher education and large research universities to understand client priorities, issues, motivations and constraints.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Lean continuous improvement methodology to assess, design, and implement organizational improvements
  • Ability to leverage AI for synthesizing data, improving decision-making, and embedding it into cross-functional processes.
