Job Summary

The Manager, State and Local Tax, plays a key role in managing the company’s multistate tax compliance and planning activities. This position is responsible for overseeing the preparation and review of state income and franchise tax filings, managing sales and use and property tax processes, and ensuring compliance with internal controls and regulatory requirements. The role also leads tax technology initiatives, supports continuous process improvement, and collaborates cross-functionally to ensure timely and accurate tax reporting across all jurisdictions.  

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Corporate Income & Franchise Tax

  • Prepare and review state and local income/franchise tax returns for corporate entities, including separate, combined, and unitary filings.
  • Oversee quarterly and annual tax provision calculations under ASC 740, including state current and deferred tax computations.
  • Prepare and file quarterly estimated tax payments and annual extensions for all relevant jurisdictions.
  • Forecast state and local cash tax liabilities to support budgeting and financial planning processes.
  • Monitor legislative changes and assess their impact on the company’s tax position, including conformity to federal tax reform (e.g., IRC §163(j), §174, GILTI).

Sales & Use Tax

  • Manage the company’s sales and use tax compliance process, including return filings, exemption certificate management, and audit defense.
  • Collaborate with global finance team to ensure proper taxability determinations and system configurations.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and automation in the sales tax function.

Property Tax

  • Oversee the annual property tax compliance cycle, including data gathering, return preparation, and payment processing.
  • Coordinate with third-party providers and internal stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate filings.
  • Analyze property tax assessments and pursue appeals where appropriate to reduce liabilities.

Tax Technology & Process Improvement

  • Lead the implementation and optimization of tax technology tools to automate data extraction, apportionment, and compliance workflows.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams to design and test scalable solutions that reduce manual effort and improve accuracy.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives by leveraging automation, standardization, and best practices to enhance tax operations and reporting.

Strategic Tax Planning & Risk Management

  • Conduct nexus studies, apportionment analyses, and voluntary disclosure initiatives to ensure compliance and minimize exposure.
  • Support M&A transactions, including state and local tax due diligence, risk identification, and post-acquisition integration planning.
  • Identify and execute tax planning strategies to drive cash tax savings and reduce the company’s effective tax rate (ETR), while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Compliance & Controls

  • Maintain effective and well-documented internal controls over tax processes in compliance with SOX and internal audit requirements.
  • Oversee the U.S. tax compliance calendar, ensuring timely and accurate filings across all jurisdictions and tax types.

Collaboration & Support

  • Partner cross-functionally with finance, legal, and operations teams to support business initiatives and ensure tax compliance.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to tax team members and contribute to knowledge sharing across the tax function.

Education and Experience Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • CPA and/or advanced degree (MST or MBA) preferred.

Experience

  • 7+ years of progressive experience in state and local taxation, preferably with Big 4 public accounting and/or publicly traded multinational corporations.
  • Strong technical knowledge of multistate corporate income/franchise tax.
  • Proven experience and tax provision and compliance software, specifically OneSource.
  • Excellent project management, communication and analytical skills.

Hybrid work environment. Minimal travel required, usually locally, but could also include international.
