Job Description
About the Team:
The Avionics team is responsible for the full lifecycle of Terran R's nervous system, designing, building, testing, installing, and operating the hardware that connects and controls every major electrical system on the vehicle and ground. The team's structure intentionally combines avionics design, manufacturing, and test to enable rapid iteration and feedback loops. Engineers are deeply embedded into other functions within Relativity, working closely with propulsion, GNC, fluids, and stage engineering teams to ensure seamless integration and operation. Now is a unique time to join: you'll get to help shape Terran R's fundamental avionics architecture and be given a high degree of ownership on components that will fly.
About the Role:
- Lead a team of 5-10 mechanical design engineers through design, analysis, and test of avionics enclosures and secondary structure
- Set team priorities and drive execution in alignment with the development schedule
- Define best practices for avionics mechanical design to ensure the reliability and survivability of sensitive electronics in harsh environments
- Partner with electrical engineering design team to define component placement and evaluate thermal performance and vibration survivability
- Partner with analysis and design teams on structural, dynamic, and thermal evaluations
About You:
- 7+ years of experience in a full cycle mechanical design engineering role
- 3+ years of leadership experience
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or related field
- Experience with 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software
- Experience with structural and thermal analysis
- Experience designing and developing mechanical hardware which is made to help electronics survive harsh environments
Nice to haves but not required:
- Experience with the design of electronic assemblies, batteries, and/or vibration isolation systems
- Experience with finite element analysis methods
- Applied knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
- Proficient with NX/Teamcenter CAD package
