Job Description Summary

Organization's Summary Statement:

The Office of Counseling Services at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore invites applicants to apply for a full-time, grant-funded, exempt, position. The position will report to the Director of the University Counseling Center.

The Mental Health Counselor provides culturally competent intake assessments, triage appointments, crisis intervention, case management, solution-focused individual therapy, group therapy and conflict resolution strategies.

Responsibilities:

  • Prevention and wellness programming (including psychoeducational workshop

development planning and presentation).

  • Building relationships and collaborate with other campus departments (e.g.,

Athletics, Student Engagement and Lifelong Learning, Campus Life, Residence

Life, Student Health, Wellness Center, and others) to foster resource allocation

and person power to effectively coordinate training efforts, as well as offer

larger campus events and programs.

  • Facilitate marketing around prevention and wellness programming for the

campus community by working with community partners (e.g., neighboring

colleges, non-profit organizations, etc.) to provide relevant programming.

  • Participate in after hours on call services. Some evening and weekend hours

required as needed.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Psychology, Counseling, or Social Work, or related field with

a clinical track.

  • One-year post-graduate clinical experience.
  • Experience working with transitional age adults.

Knowledge/Skills/ Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-

paced environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and make ethical, clinically

informed decisions.

  • Capacity to handle stressful or complex clinical situations with professionalism

and compassion.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and community

partners.

Physical Demands:

  • May require extended periods of standing, bending, stooping, sitting at desk.
  • May require lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Requires communication with a variety of constituents externally and internally.
  • Requires operation of a variety of office equipment.

Preferences:

  • Experience providing counseling services to college-aged adults in a college or

university counseling center.

  • Experience in clinical supervision of trainees or early-career professionals.
  • Ability to work effectively with clients presenting with severe emotional

disturbances

Licenses/ Certifications:

  • Maryland license or license eligible within the state within six (6) months of

employment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Master's degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or a closely related field with a clinical focus.

Experience: One year of post-graduate clinical experience.

Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

Ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Ability to exercise sound judgment and make ethical, clinically informed decisions.

Skill in organizing and time management.
