Department:
Diagnostic ImagingMedical MRI technologists, also referred to as MRI technicians, utilize magnetic resonance imaging scanners to capture specific images ordered by a physician to aid in patient diagnosis. MRI techs must be able to closely follow a physician’s instructions, prepare and operate MRI equipment, position patients correctly and effectively record the requested diagnostic images. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Performs Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the following areas to include but not limited to: cardiac, neuro, abdominal, chest, spine, and extremities.
- Transports patients by stretcher, bed, wheelchair, or walking. Provides care for patients during transportation and within the department, if necessary.
- Assists patients by lifting and moving them off and on the imaging table. Provides bedpans and urinals as needed. Assures that patients are properly dressed for procedures.
- Prepares patient for their exam by consenting, explaining exam and answering patient questions. Positions patient for MRI procedures.
- Cares for patient during procedures by assisting them to the rest rooms, providing blankets, etc.
- Starts intravenous lines and administers contrast and other preparations as to complete exam safely and in a timely fashion.
- Assists with emergency medical treatment under physician direction.
- Pulls contrast from medication dispenser per protocol and documents in hospital information system (HIS).
- Monitors patient condition pre and post procedure and reports changes in the patient’s condition to the Radiologist, Cardiologist, or RN for follow up.
- Is proficient on 3D software and can perform post processing reconstructions for MRI.
- Skillfully operates all MR systems to comply with all equipment specification.
- Performs data entry in computer systems necessary for workflow and patient care, such as radiology
- information system (RIS), PACS, hospital information systems (HIS).
- Demonstrates proficiency in confirming patient demographics and obtaining adequate patient history prior
- to beginning a procedure.
- Demonstrates accuracy in completing paper/forms for MR screening.
- Practices infection control (disinfection) with all procedures and hand-washing before and after each patient.
- Knows procedure for the release of patients.
- Accurately charges all procedures, supplies, and non-billable items by the end of the work shift.
- Is competent in loading and operating the power injector for contrast studies. Technologist may give contrast medias and may flush lines with normal saline.
- Under the direct supervision of the Radiologist, the technologist may pull Xylocaine for procedure
- Identifies cross section anatomy and uses appropriate protocols for parts examined.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the use of MRI Patient Monitoring Systems.
- Assists physicians with complex procedures and records pertinent information.
- Orders and maintains the department order of supplies.
- Reports equipment malfunctions for repair and schedules preventative maintenance.
- Correctly “screens” individuals for MRI procedures for patient safety. Can define safety issues in MRI.
- Can access websites/resources to determine compatibility of implanted devices.
- Knows patient pregnancy policy for MRI.
- Knows when and how to use “emergency power shut down” and “quench” buttons on all MRI equipment.
- Knows procedure for reporting equipment failures with regards to MRI scanners and related equipment.
- Responsible for accreditation & records.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Associate’s degree in a program related to the radiology field or High School diploma or GED with completion of an MRI training program.
Licensure: Registered with the ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) (M) or ARMIT American Registry of MRI technologists) required. Intravenous therapy certification required. Current BLS/Healthcare Provider status as per American Heart Association standards required.
Experience: One year of experience as a licensed technologist.
Pay Range: The hourly rate for this position is $66.08 - $79.53. The range displayed on this job posting reflects the target for new hire salaries for this position.
Shift Differentials:
Hourly Evening Shift Differential: $2.00
Hourly Night Shift Differential: $4.00
