Job Description

Summary

Provides routine-to-acute primary care, admission assessment, intervention, evaluation and discharge responsibilities to well newborns in the setting of post-partum newborn medical service. Provides delivery room acute care, admission assessment, intervention, evaluation and pre-transport stabilization services to acutely or critically ill newborn infants in a low risk community hospital based obstetrical service.

Responsibilities

  • Provides on call coverage from home on a per diem basis, based on availability to respond to required attendance at deliveries to at-risk infants as per standard guidelines.
  • Provides on call coverage from home on a per diem basis, based on availability to respond to request for evaluation of any unstable or symptomatic infants as per standard guidelines.
  • Required response time from call to arrival is within 30 minutes.

Duties

  • Obtains detailed patient history, performs physical assessments, and interprets data; formulates and evaluates the outcome of medical care plans.
  • Writes appropriate medical orders, to include orders for controlled substances, as required.
  • Performs therapeutic interventions on an elective and/or emergency basis, including, but not limited to, endotracheal intubation, lumbar puncture, venous access, umbilical lines, and thoracostomy.
  • Notifies supervising attending physician on call regarding any unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation as per collaborative agreement.
  • Attends high-risk deliveries requiring expertise in delivery room resuscitation and stabilization; counsels families prior to delivery regarding anticipated events.
  • Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Independent Licensed Practitioner degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Certification/Licensure National certification as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, APRN or Physician Assistant.
