Job Summary

A pharmacist is responsible for: The procurement, distribution, and control of all pharmaceuticals used within the North Shore Medical Center. The ideal candidate will be responsible, trained, and competent for the interpretation, verification, order entry, compounding, and dispensing of pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical supplies for adult, geriatric, and pediatric patients. The Clinical Pharmacist is also responsible for assuring the safe and effective use of medications, provision of drug information, and patient counseling. They will be responsible for assisting in the development and coordination of all the activities of pharmacy services.

The main responsibilities for this role focus on the following key areas:

  • Interprets and evaluates medication orders prior to entry/verification
  • Clinically assesses orders for dose, route, frequency, and appropriateness of medication therapy
  • Monitors orders for drug interactions, adverse reactions, incompatibilities, therapeutic duplication, allergies
  • Identifies, mitigates, prevents, and documents problems with medication orders or therapeutic regimens, including medication errors or adverse drug reactions
  • Verifies the accuracy of order entry and of medication products dispensed- Delivers optimal pharmaceutical care by participating in direct patient-care interdisciplinary rounds- Advises nurses, doctors, and patients on the proper and safe use of medications
  • Narcotic control and assists in record maintenance
  • Oversees pharmacy technician activities
  • Assists in developing and implementing departmental clinical and educational programs
  • Assists in inventory control and proper medication storage
  • Inspects completed IV admixtures as prepared by support staff for quality and accuracy. May be asked to prepare IV admixtures as needed.
  • Complies with USP 797 and USP 795 when compounding or overseeing compounded medications
  • Prepares prescriptions in accordance with pharmacy laws and practice
  • Maintains proper licensure and educational requirements and provides documentation upon request

Qualifications

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily and be able to proficiently demonstrate computer applications.- Requires attention to detail and concentration.- Good analytical skills are a must.- Ability to manage a large number of tasks simultaneously and to anticipate future needs.
  • Ability to communicate with a wide variety of professionals and non-professionals.
  • New grads require 2 years experience in a clinical setting as a pharmacy intern.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience working in a clinical environment preferred.
  • Graduate from an accredited college of pharmacy is required.
  • Current licensure as a Pharmacist by the State of Massachusetts is required.
