Job Description

Job Summary:

Assist pharmacists with technical and supportive functions throughout a variety of settings such as hospital inpatient, outpatient infusion, oncology, ambulatory clinics and outpatient retail pharmacy.

Job Requirements:

Required Licenses

Current Pharmacy Technician license in the State of Idaho

BLS Certification within six months of hire

Minimum Work Experience

At least one year of pharmacy related experience

Required Skills

Computer skills and adequate typing speed preferred.

Essential Functions:

  • Works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams throughout the healthcare system.
  • Prepares and distributes mediations under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Compounds IV admixtures using proper aseptic technique.
  • Maintains and updates patient medication histories by acquiring current medication lists, interviewing patients or their caregivers and reviewing prescription fill history for all admitted patients and pre-operatively for extended recovery surgical patients.
  • Maintains appropriate medication stock levels and ensures proper storage of medications to promote safe and cost-effective pharmaceutical services.
  • Fills and maintains automated dispensing machines located throughout the hospital/clinics. Refills medication carts and emergency kits for nurses and other hospital departments on an as needed basis.
  • Performs medication outdate duties throughout the facility.
  • Transports medications to various units, such as the operating rooms, emergency department, infusion departments, nursing stations, etc.
  • Answers phone calls and redirects appropriately.
  • Maintains accurate records according to all state and federal regulations to include controlled substance, compounding and safety protocols.

Functional Demands:

Population Served

Neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.

Physical Demands

Lifting: Occasional lift to a maximum of 25 lbs. from floor to waist height from floor to waist and 12 lbs. to overhead height (2 x hr. up to 8 x day). No frequent lifts. Items lifted-IV bags and boxes.

Push/Pull: Minimal force required to push carts 100-200 feet.

Carry: Maximum of 25 lb. box for 20 feet

Fine Motor: High degree of fine motor skill to mix medications, manipulate syringes, etc…

Standing: Up to 60 minutes at one time, up to 8 hours per day

Sitting: Up to 60 minutes at one time, up to 8 hours per day

Kneeling: Up to 5 minutes at one time, up to 5 minutes per day

Stooping: Up to 5 minutes at one time up to 5 minutes per day

Climbing: UP to 2 minutes at one time up to 20 minutes per day

Other: Occasional reaching/handing for preparing medications for distribution. Frequent fingering to type, write, and use the phone and computer. Constant talking, hearing, and seeing to interact with patient and other healthcare providers with frequent visual acuity sufficient to count and dispense medication

Environmental Conditions

Location: Inside. Occasional exposure to wet and humidity through water and hand washing. Occasional exposure to noise caused by intermittent distractions from computer printer and telephones. Occasional exposure to toxic and caustic chemical with chemotherapeutic medications. Minimal exposure to biohazardous blood and body fluids.
