Job Summary
Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the Oncology Pharmacy Technician supports oncology pharmacy operations by preparing, compounding, dispensing, and handling chemotherapy and other cancer-related medications. The role involves strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards (including handling of hazardous drugs), maintaining inventory, assisting patient‐care services, and contributing to quality and process improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Prepare and compound sterile intravenous (IV) chemotherapy, biologics, immunotherapy, and supportive care infusions according to physician orders and pharmacy protocols.
- Perform daily, weekly, monthly cleaning and maintenance of compounding areas, hoods, and ancillary equipment.
- Follow USP standards (e.g., USP 797, USP 800) and state/local regulations on sterile compounding and handling hazardous drugs to ensure the utmost cleanliness of the IV rooms and to protect patient safety and product integrity.
- Verify accuracy of medication orders (pre‐dispensing checks); utilize compounding hardware/software; label, package, and distribute oncology medications
- Monitor and replenish oncology drug and supply inventory, including hazardous drugs; ensure proper storage (temperature, separation of hazardous vs non‐hazardous) and record keeping.
- Participate in quality improvement tasks: environmental monitoring, equipment checks, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory policies.
- Maintain accurate documentation of compounding logs, supply usage, hazardous waste disposal, and any deviations/errors.
- Follow institutional, state, and federal laws/regulations for drug handling and USP standards, including those related to hazardous drugs.
- Maintain and operate sterile compounding hoods, CSTDs; understand cleaning, calibration, and maintenance.
