Job Description
Position Summary
The phlebotomy supervisor acts with certain independence and discretionary judgement, always in the best interest of Starling, the laboratory and the patient. They coordinate operations and activities in the department as assigned, to assist the Manager/Director in maintaining efficient and profitable daily operations of the Lab. These activities are performed in accordance with all existing regulatory, state and company standards, policies and procedures. The Supervisor will be required to travel to other sites to maintain operational efficiencies.
Key Accountabilities
o Supervises staff including Team Leads, Phlebotomists and PSR's. Will be responsible for scheduling and assigning work, resolving problems, enforcing policies, coaching, and providing input to performance evaluations.
o Manages callouts and PTO requests on a daily, weekly, monthly basis. May be required to sign off on timekeeping, maintains attendance records for entire team.
o Maintains competency and working knowledge of all aspects of the phlebotomy department.
o Implements and monitors departmental goals and objectives for the work group, making sure they align with the strategic direction of the organization, by analyzing needs and developing recommendations.
o Implements individual performance expectations; coaches, develops, and provides input to performance evaluations to enable employees to be successful in contributing to the achievement of individual and work group objectives.
o Actively seeks opportunities to model teamwork through collaboration both within and outside the work group in support of the organization's objectives.
o Assumes responsibility for self-improvement, in collaboration with superiors, by identifying, communicating and seeking resources or instruction/validation to meet own learning needs, and is self-directed in maintaining currency of validations.
o Trains new employees on procedures, policies and customer service skills.
o Continually strives to improve quality and productivity by identifying improvement opportunities and recommending and implementing changes.
o Uses resources effectively and efficiently to achieve the goals and objectives of the practice within established budgets.
o Orders supplies to maintain inventory when needed. Works with team leads to set par levels for inventory items.
o Ensures compliance with regulations and clinical standards of quality patient care.
o May at times have to carry an assigned workload may be required to work at any facility based on operation need, and schedule may vary.
o Demonstrates competencies, including knowledge and behaviors, to meet patient needs in particular specialty.
o Working knowledge of LIS and EHR computer systems and is able to provide back-up to staff as needed.
o Schedules and runs monthly staff meetings.
o Performs other duties as requested.
Relationships
o Reports to Practice Manager/Director.
o Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with patients, providers, staff, peer group,
Corporate administration, IT, and vendors.
Qualifications (Education, Experience, Additional Skills & Requirements)
o Associate or bachelor's Degree preferred. Experience in the field may be used in lieu of education.
o At least 2 years of experience as a phlebotomist.
o Supervisory experience is preferred but not required.
o Valid Drivers license and reliable transportation.
o Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
o Good computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Teams.
o Excellent writing and keyboarding skills.
o Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with all levels of staff and physicians.
o Ability to work effectively and professionally under pressure.
o Ability to work in a team and to share responsibilities and duties.
o Ability to resolve interpersonal conflicts in a straightforward and timely manner.
o Ability to set priorities, be organized and be a self-starter.
o Ability to be friendly, empathic and an adept communicator.
o Ability to treat both staff and patients with respect.
Working Conditions, Physical Requirements
o Travel to all practice locations.
o Physical activity will include walking, standing, and sitting.
o Physical demands may also include lifting and carrying equipment up to 30 lbs.
o Other physical requirements include speaking and hearing ability, sufficient to communicate effectively by phone or in person at normal volumes; vision adequate to read correspondence, computer screen, forms, etc.; and good manual dexterity.
