Job Description
The Policy Research Specialist plays a key role in supporting underwriting and accounting operations through detailed investigation and documentation of account discrepancies. This position focuses on reviewing agent, customer, carrier, and finance company data to identify potential errors, verify billing and audit details, and determine explanations related to policy changes or endorsement inquiries.
This role requires exceptional attention to detail, analytical reasoning, and communication skills to ensure accuracy, transparency, and timely resolution of complex account issues within a brokerage environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Research & Resolution
- Conduct in-depth reviews of agent, customer, carrier, and finance company records to resolve billing, audit, or endorsement discrepancies.
- Identify root causes of data inconsistencies and determine whether errors are due to system, user, or carrier processes.
- Document all findings clearly, providing concise explanations or corrective actions for internal and external stakeholders.
- Collaborate with accounting, underwriting, and processing teams to validate research outcomes and confirm resolution steps.
- Data Accuracy & Documentation
- Maintain organized records of all research activities for audit purposes.
- Review and cross-check multiple systems, including carrier portals, billing platforms, and policy management systems (IMS, ImageRight, etc.).
- Update workflow management tools to reflect case status and completion timelines accurately.
- Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with internal departments, carrier representatives, and agency partners to gather or clarify missing details.
- Escalate complex or high-impact issues to leadership with recommended next steps.
- Participate in process improvement discussions and assist in developing best practices for research documentation.
- Compliance & Quality
- Ensure all work adheres to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and regulatory requirements.
- Support internal quality reviews by providing research documentation and analysis as requested.
- Identify trends in recurring issues and propose solutions for systemic improvements.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, Insurance, or a related field preferred.
Experience:
- 2+ years in insurance operations, accounting, or underwriting support with emphasis on data review, billing, or policy research.
- Experience in a brokerage or carrier environment preferred.
Technical Skills:
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word).
- Experience using insurance management systems such as ImageRight, Workday, or similar platforms.
- Comfort working across multiple systems and data sources simultaneously.
