Job Description
Your daily work involves teaching, helping, empowering students in our residential program to be the best they can be. Our desire is to ensure that our students-who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, visually impaired, or deafblind-have access to a living environment that matches the care and support they would receive at home.
Instruction and Supervision: 80%
You will mentor and model for the students you work with:
Instructs students in age appropriate daily living skills
Knows where students in department are at all times
Works with students to complete homework and other projects
Instructs student on appropriate leisure time activities
Attends department meetings as scheduled
Transport students to off-campus activities and appointments
Maintain Safe and Clean Environment: 10%
Follows established emergency evacuation procedures
Makes sure the cottage is clean and sanitary
Report all maintenance issues through established procedures
Record Keeping: 5%
Completes daily logbook
Completes incident reports when needed
Submits timesheets and requests for leave as instructed
All other duties as assigned: 5%
Education & Experience:
Required: A high school diploma or equivalency is required.
Preferred: Training or experience in the field of childcare in residential facilities.Experience in a residential setting and knowledge of child development.
Preferred: Specific experience working with students and staff who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, visually impaired, or deafblind.
Preferred: Red Cross, CPR, and other related training
Knowledge & Skills:
Communication: Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or a willingness to reach target proficiency levels to foster cooperative relationships with students and staff.
Cooperation: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents and staff. Ability to work as a team
Technical: Understanding of basic computer and technology skills. Ability to handle stressful situations with students with varying levels of education, social and emotional experiences.
Other Qualification Information
During the one-year probationary period, Residential Advisor 1 must successfully complete the Advanced Training Course for Residential Youth and Child Care Workers (RCYCP). This program was developed by the National Resource Center for Youth Services at the University of Oklahoma and is conducted by the staff at the Montana School for the Deaf and the Blind. Upon successfully completing, the one-year probationary period and the RCYCP course a $1.55 an hour increase is granted per the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.
