Responsibilities:
Manage sales and use projects performed within the SALT Group, and ensure accurate and timely deliverables
Manage and develop staff for all engagements which they are assigned
Incorporate feedback from jobs to improve performance
Develop and enhance their own technical understanding of SALT specialty areas
Create a positive work environment for SALT team members, as well as create a positive experience when working with other practices in order to enhance and promote SALT within the firm
Serve as Firm technical resource for multistate sales and use tax issues
Requirements/Qualifications:
Keep abreast of SALT developments nationwide; communicate to Firm.
Develop and enhance excellent technical knowledge, writing skills and verbal communication skills; interpret, complete and review opinion papers, protest documents, internal technical communications, etc.
Perform complex tax research; manage tax research projects; utilize staff when appropriate.
Develop deep understanding of client business and industries to provide solutions to SALT related issues
Develop and advise on strategies to minimize sales and use tax burden of clients
Assist with business restructuring projects with a significant SALT component.
Manage state and local tax audits; demonstrate ability to advocate client positions in audit and other potentially adversarial settings with state and local government officials while maintaining positive relationships with government personnel and directing client communications to set expectations.
Build and maintain relationships with peer government officials for assistance with various client issues; develop and maintain relationships with professional colleagues within the tax community.
Demonstrate the ability to generate high quality work under deadlines and within budgets; outstanding ability to multi-task within and outside of the firm and across multiple clients, assignments and staff to meet often tight deadlines
Manage the economics and profitability of projects.
Become an integral part of the technical and professional development of staff; serve as formal and informal mentor to staff.
Participate in public speaking on technical topics to internal and external audiences.
Participate in firm’s practice development efforts through involvement with referral sources, community and industry activities.
Required Experience:
A minimum of 7 calendar years of state and local tax experience, demonstrating a proven progression in complexity of tax issues addressed.
CPA or CMI preferred.
Proficiency in complex state and local tax research.
Bachelors or Master’s degree in accounting and/or taxation, or advanced degree (e.g., law degree) and related work experience.
Minimum of forty hours of continuing professional education is required each year to maintain and develop technical and business skills.
Proficiency in use of tax compliance software, legal research software, and suite of Microsoft Office programs.
