Job Description
- 40% Tutors students individually or in small groups in person, online, or by email. Assists students with study skills, laboratory applications, and scientific writing.
- 15% Supports students enrolled in corequisite or gateway science courses by reinforcing lecture and lab content.
- 15% Supervises and trains peer tutors in the Science Hub.
- 10% Maintains accurate records of students assisted and manages use of Science Hub resources.
- 15% Prepares handouts, lab study aids, and supplemental instructional materials.
- 5% Performs other related duties as assigned by the Science Hub Coordinator.
- Demonstrates the Viking Values of balance, clarity, gratitude, service, teamwork, and trust.
- Provides friendly, supportive service in the Science Hub.
- Keeps current in tutoring strategies, scientific literacy, and student success practices.
- Collaborates with science faculty to align support with course outcomes.
- Participates in professional development and stays current in the sciences and in teaching/learning best practices.
- Maintains confidentiality of student records in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Complies with all state and federal laws and regulations relating to higher education.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related field is required.
- A Master’s degree in one of these fields is preferred.
- Experience with college-level tutoring, laboratory instruction, or STEM education programs is preferred.
- Ability to clearly communicate and explain scientific concepts to students of varying academic backgrounds.
- Patience and encouragement when working with students.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
