Job Description

Discord is looking for experienced and passionate Senior Data Engineers to join our Data team! Our data infrastructure powers insights across the entire company, and we need Senior Data Engineers who are passionate about building the foundational datasets and pipelines that enable data-driven decision making at scale. You'll be building the analytical backbone that supports everything from product development to experimentation to machine learning - the systems that help us understand and improve how people experience Discord.

Data Engineers at Discord collaborate with data science and engineering teams to build and support foundational high-leverage data sets that power tools, analyses, and models. The data sets built by DE directly inform how we identify opportunities, measure success, and make decisions. We're hiring for multiple verticals on our Data Engineering team, including Growth, Safety, and Gaming. If building elegant data systems that power insights for hundreds of millions of users sounds exciting, we'd love to hear from you!

What You'll Be Doing

  • Create and maintain data pipelines and foundational datasets to support analytics, modeling, experimentation, and product/business needs
  • Design and build database architectures with massive and complex data, balancing ergonomic benefits with computational load and cost
  • Partner closely with data science and engineering teams to improve instrumentation coverage, accuracy, and reliability across Discord's products
  • Build scalable data quality audits, implementing automated alerting and anomaly detection systems that catch issues before they impact downstream consumers
  • Proactively identify and execute opportunities to improve ETL performance, reduce costs, and enhance the overall data platform experience
  • Create dashboards and reporting infrastructure that enable self-serve analytics and support key business objectives across functional teams
  • Champion data engineering best practices including documentation, testing, and maintainable code that scales with Discord's growth

What you should have

  • 4+ years of experience building data pipelines in production environments with high volumes of consumer data
  • 4+ years of experience in designing, developing, and maintaining robust data models from structured and unstructured sources
  • 4+ years of experience writing accurate and effective code in SQL and Python
  • Experience implementing and monitoring audits for data quality with massive data sets (e.g. billions of rows)
  • Experience proactively identifying opportunities to improve ETL & dashboard performance and cost
  • Experience leveraging your excellent communication and stakeholder management skills to thrive in ambiguous environments where problems are not well-defined and evolve quickly
  • Experience collaborating directly with data science, machine learning, and product engineering teams
  • A desire to work with amazing, passionate people who care deeply about solving challenging problems to improve Discord
  • Last but not least - a collaborative attitude and a healthy dose of natural curiosity!

Bonus Points

  • Discord passion: You're an active Discord user or have deep knowledge of gaming and creator communities
  • Data architecture expertise: Experience owning data models for functional areas with deep knowledge of performant, scalable design patterns
  • Modern data stack: Hands-on experience with BigQuery, Airflow, DBT, or similar technologies in production environments
  • Visualization platforms: Proficiency with Looker, Tableau, or similar BI tools and understanding of how data architecture impacts dashboard performance
  • Experimentation infrastructure: Experience designing data systems that power A/B testing and statistical analysis at scale
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Experience working with compliance, legal, or litigation teams on data-related initiatives
  • For Growth analytics: Experience working on SEO, GEO, or top-of-funnel growth features
  • For Gaming: Background in gaming analytics or community-driven platforms
  • For Safety: Background promoting best practices in data security, compliance, and governance standards
