Job Description

University of Minnesota Physicians is seeking a Senior Medical Director for the Birthplace at the University of Minnesota Medical Center.

About the Role:

  • Provide professional medical direction and leadership for the Birthplace and Inpatient Gynecology.
  • Work closely with the Director of Nursing dyad partner to constantly improve the provision of high-quality, patient-centered care.
  • Lead by example and engage physicians and staff in creating a positive work environment that values excellence, teamwork, and constantly strives to exceed patient and family expectations.
  • This will be supported at a 0.2 FTE, this time will need to be protected by the individual’s primary employer/supervisor.
  • Will report to the VPMA at UMMC with a matrixed reporting relationship to the Women’s Service Line.
  • 1-year term

Principal Responsibilities:

In partnership with the Director of Nursing and the MHealth FV UMMC leadership team the senior medical director will:

1. Assist in creating an environment that drives for quality, safety, and operational efficiency

2. Partner with UMMC leadership team to create and implement initiatives to achieve organizational goals.

3. Collaborate with domain and/or service line leadership to ensure the inpatient programs are appropriately implementing care standards, strategic priorities, regulatory and quality goals

4. Communicate with physicians/providers to ensure they are aware of current initiatives and plans

5. Identify annual goals that support organizational strategic plan and objectives as related to the 5 performance dimensions: Quality & Safety, Efficiency, Staff Engagement, Patient Experience, and Efficiency

6. Work with site administrative leadership to proactively address patient concerns and complaints.

7. Address patient flow, coding concerns, safety issues, staffing level, budget resources/utilization and capital equipment planning, personnel performance, and revenue projections.

8. Actively participate in the identification and resolution of issues raised by staff (e.g. medical, resident, nursing or other health care team members) and patients/families. This includes those issues raised in COMPASS and outside of COMPASS

9. Collaborate with Director of Nursing, unit managers, quality and patient safety for safety event investigation and RCA action plan development and implementation

10. Oversee assigned medical directors to ensure performance towards expectations

Independent responsibility:

1. Meet regularly with dyad Director of Nursing and UMMC senior leadership team.

2. Serve as a leader as appropriate within the appropriate domain or service line,

3. Accountable for the spread of system best practices developed by domain/service line within UMMC

4. Lead safety across the units of responsibility through Rounding to Influence

5. Provide clinical expertise and guidance in the areas applicable to the inpatient services.

6. Provide assistance and advisement for regulatory compliance issues.

7. Attend the UMMC safety call/huddle at least once per week.

8. Liaison with appropriate academic divisions to ensure engagement between academic divisions and clinical care teams.

9. Respect and represent ALL members of the health care team that work in the inpatient arena.

10. Demonstrate effective communication and teamwork skills.

11. Demonstrate the elements of the desired organizational culture during patient care and in working with the inter-professional team.

12. Demonstrate the ability to balance and support decisions of the organization that may conflict with individual goals or specific service line/inpatient service requests.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited ACGME Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women’s Health residency training program.  
  • Board eligible/certified with the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology (ABOG).
  • Licensed or ability to obtain Minnesota Board of Medical Practice Licensure. 
  • Ability to obtain/maintain DEA certification in the State of Minnesota 
  • Meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges 
  • Member, in good standing, of the Medical Staff of UMMC

Preferred Qualifications/Experience:

  • Active clinical practice.
  • 3+ years of experience in a large care delivery system; demonstrated experience in strategic and operational leadership
  • Formal training or significant experience in quality improvement
  • Ability to work with physicians, staff, and leadership.
  • Demonstrated success in delivering results within available resources.
  • Extensive experience working in a collaborative manner with physicians, clinicians, staff and other leaders; must have examples of successful collaborative efforts.
  • Strong performance orientation and skillful strategic thinking. Establishes clear expectations and continuously measures performance. Maintains focus on priorities.
  • Demonstrated success in creating and driving change that focuses on sustained improvement.
  • Demonstrated leadership and an ability to manage effectively through influence and motivate others.
  • Maintains a commitment to quality and service in all aspects of their work.
  • Proven customer focus and delivers on commitments.
  • Collaborative style with the ability to engage multiple stakeholders with differing viewpoints.
  • Possesses unquestionable professional integrity and a candid, honest style which evokes credibility and inspires confidence.
  • Willing to articulate concerns; is comfortable challenging the prevailing point of view.

Pay & Benefits:

  • Overall clinical compensation from M Physicians will remain at its present level. This leadership position is compensated in the form of protected administrative time.  As such, the corresponding cFTE for direct patient care may be adjusted by the selectee’s CSU to reflect this reallocation of responsibilities.
