POSITION OVERVIEW
The Spotter supports safe and efficient operation of small construction equipment by maintaining visual awareness of personnel, obstacles, utilities, and site hazards. This role is responsible for clear communication with equipment operators, ensuring work activities are conducted in compliance with company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and site-specific requirements.
Requirements
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITES
- Maintain constant visual contact with the equipment operator during movement, positioning, and operation of small equipment (e.g., skid steers, mini-excavators, rollers, compactors)
- Identify and communicate potential hazards, including underground utilities, overhead lines, pedestrians, vehicles, uneven terrain, and pinch points
- Use clear, standardized hand signals, verbal communication, or two-way radios to guide equipment movement
- Establish and maintain safe work zones, including barricades, cones, and exclusion areas
- Monitor job site conditions and stop work immediately if unsafe conditions are observed
- Assist with traffic control, backing operations, and tight-clearance maneuvers as required
- Support the operator and crew with general labor duties when not actively spotting
- Ensure compliance with job safety analyses (JSA), tailgate meetings, and site-specific safety plans
- Report near misses, incidents, and safety concerns to the supervisor promptly
- Maintain proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
COMPETENCIES
- Strong situational awareness and attention to detail
- Clear and confident communication skills
- Understanding of construction site hazards and safe work practices
- Ability to follow directions and safety procedures consistently
- Dependable, alert, and safety-focused mindset
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- 6+ months experience in construction, civil, utility, or oil & gas field work preferred
- Previous experience spotting equipment is a plus, but not required
- OSHA 10 preferred
- CPR / First Aid
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to stand, walk, and remain alert for extended periods
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as needed
- Visual and auditory acuity to identify hazards and communicate effectively
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Active construction or field job sites
- Exposure to noise, dust, uneven terrain, and moving equipment
- Long shifts and variable schedules may be required depending on project needs
