Job Description

This is a rare opportunity to join a company and truly leave your mark. A small rapidly growing business needs to bring in a Sr. Cost Accountant. This will be the first time that we have someone dedicated to analyzing our business in this manner. We are looking for an experienced Sr. Cost Accountant who can come in and dig into our business.

Job Title: Senior Cost Accountant

Department: Finance

Reports To: CFO

SUMMARY: The Senior Cost Accountant is responsible for overseeing the corporate cost accounting function, ensuring proper recording of day-to-day transactions of the organization. The Senior Cost Accountant will apply principles of cost accounting to conduct studies which provide detailed cost information not supplied by the general accounting systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

  • Plan, study, and collect data to determine costs of business activity such as raw material purchases, inventory, and labor.
  • Monitor job costing and work orders to ensure accuracy of inventory costs.
  • Analyze changes in product design, raw materials, manufacturing methods, or services provided, to determine effect on cost.
  • Analyze actual manufacturing costs and prepare periodic reports comparing standard costs to actual production costs.
  • Record cost information relating to inventory costing for use in controlling expenditures.
  • Provide reports on labor and perform the associated monthly journal entries.
  • Maintain and report on inventory cycle counting activities.
  • Track and report on overhead costs and rates.
  • Analyze audits of costs and prepare reports.
  • Compile cost information to be used in operating budget preparation.
  • Make estimates of new and proposed product or service costs.
  • Recommend cost efficiencies in new product layouts.
  • Provide management with reports specifying and comparing factors affecting price and profitability of products or services, including sales, gross profit performance, and trends.
  • Provide other management reports as required.
  • Support the CFO in special projects.
  • Internal managerial reporting.
  • Review inventory accounts.
  • Prepare inventory cost rolls and adjustments.
  • Trained to cover A/P and A/R as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May direct the work of others on a project basis.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both written and verbal, and have good interpersonal skills.
  • Must be detail oriented and be able to handle more than one task at a time making sure that each task is followed through to completion.
  • A good understanding of the dynamics of a high-volume manufacturing business and the issues that are important to senior management.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Prefer a bachelor's degree in accounting and/or finance, a minimum 3 - 5 years related experience, preferably in a fast paced manufacturing environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers. Ability to communicate with all levels.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, and analysis. Compute ratios and percentages.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to deal with several abstract and concrete variables at one time.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

COMPUTER SKILLS

Proficient with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Familiar with MRP, ERP, labor tracking and accounting software systems.
