Reporting to the Director-Fleet Management, the Senior Mechanic is a skilled technician who handles complex mechanical diagnoses and repairs, while also providing technical guidance, scheduling, and oversight to other mechanics. This role involves leading a team in maintaining and repairing a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment, performing advanced diagnostics, and ensuring quality standards are met through inspections and record-keeping.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)

  • Strictly adheres to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.

  • Provides a safe environment for all employees, customers and visitors.

  • Operational Performance & Best Practices

  • Perfrm complex diagnoses and repairs on a wide range of equipment.

  • Troubleshoot and repair major assemblies like engines, transmissions, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, air compressors, gps systems, etc.

  • Perform safety and preventive maintenance inspections on equipment and vehicles.

  • Provide technical direction and functional supervision to mechanics.

  • Schedule and assing work to the maintenance team.

  • Inspect the work of others to ensure quality control standards are met.

  • Train junior mechanics on proper and safe work procedures.

  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of equipment and vehicles during an assigned shift.

  • Schedule maintenance activities based on priorities.

  • Maintain detailed records of repairs, time and materials used.

  • Use MaintainX to track work orders.

  • Assist in preparing performance evaluations.

  • Communicate with other departments, supervisors, and equipment operators to coordinate repairs and address needs.

  • Deal with vendor and contractors.

Job Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED required

  • Technical diploma or Tradesperson certification are a plus

  • Up to 5 years construction/jobsite experience

  • Up to 5 years Heavy Machinery or similar; drill rigs a plus

  • Previous experience troubleshooting skills in the areas of hydraulics, diesel engines and electrical systems

  • Experience with controls (encoders, CANBUS, linear transducers, PLC, etc)

  • Heavy equipment diagnostics (CAT, Cummins)

  • Welding and fabrication

  • Excellent judgement and able to make responsible decisions

  • Excellent people skills and an enthusiastic attitude

  • High level of professionalism, judgement, and strong work ethic

  • Ability to work independently without constant direction

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills. Should be able to adapt communication style to suit different audiences both internally and externally

  • This position requires the successful candidate to have a valid driver's license and provide proof that s/he has a valid driver's license upon being hired.

Pay is based on market location and may vary based on factors including experience, skills, education and other job-related reasons. The annual salary range for this position is $100,000 - $110,000.
