The Opportunity

Introduction to the team:

AQMed is developing a next-generation, non-invasive cardiac diagnostic device designed to revolutionize how heart health is assessed. The team operates at the intersection of regulated medical device development and fast-paced startup innovation, with a strong emphasis on quality, rigor, and patient safety.

Introduction to the role:

SandboxAQ is seeking a highly experienced Software Test Engineer, Medical Devices to drive our software verification and validation (V&V) for a novel medical device. This role is central to ensuring our software meets FDA regulatory requirements while supporting rapid, high-quality product development.

This individual will lead end-to-end software testing efforts, directly authoring test plans, executing hands-on testing across the stack, and producing submission-ready documentation to support an FDA 510(k) filing. You will serve as the 'Voice of Quality' for software, partnering closely with Engineering, Quality, and Regulatory Affairs to ensure safety, compliance, and exceptional product quality.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the end-to-end software testing lifecycle, including authoring and maintaining comprehensive software test plans, protocols, and reports with full traceability to requirements at the FDA "enhanced software documentation" level.

• Drive hands-on verification and validation by designing, writing, and executing tests across multiple layers, including C/C++ firmware, Python backend services, React-based applications, and automated system-level testing.

• Design and execute manual system-level and integration testing, particularly for real-world hardware-software interaction scenarios.

• Partner with Engineering and Quality to ensure software requirements are clear, testable, and aligned with regulatory expectations.

• Contribute to quality system documentation, including risk management artifacts (e.g., software FMEA), traceability matrices, and tool qualification in alignment with SandboxAQ's Quality Management System (QMS).

Essential Skills & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.

• 7+ years of experience in software quality, software testing, or V&V roles, with significant experience in regulated medical device development.

• Strong programming proficiency with hands-on experience writing unit tests in C/C++ and Python.

• Demonstrated experience authoring and executing software V&V documentation for an FDA 510(k) submission, including both SiMD and SaMD.

• Deep knowledge of medical device software development lifecycles and standards, particularly IEC 62304.

Highly Desired Skills & Experience

• Experience testing complex systems spanning firmware, application software, and cloud services.

• Hands-on experience with modern test automation tools and frameworks (e.g., Playwright, pytest, Storybook).

• Experience working with CI/CD pipelines, particularly GitHub Actions.

• Familiarity with device fleet management and configuration tools such as Ansible or Mender.

• Prior experience supporting diagnostic or cardiology medical devices.

Note: The ideal candidate will be based out of our Palo Alto offices and work on-site at least 50% of the time.
