Job Description

Job Summary

Supports, and is responsible for incorporating into job performance, the Frederick Health (FH) mission, vision, core values and customer service philosophy and adheres to the FH Compliance Program, including following all regulatory requirements and the FH Standards of Behavior.

The Lab Section Supervisor is responsible for activities in the Pre-Analytic, Analytic, and Post-Analytic phases in the Laboratory Path of Workflow including technical and scientific oversight and supervision of staff and daily operations of the designated laboratory section(s). The Supervisor ensures that all duties are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards, and in compliance with all criteria mandated by the appropriate accrediting and licensing agencies. His/her oversight responsibilities include test monitoring, QC compliance, staff training, and staff performance and competency evaluations. Complies with the CLIA standards listed as responsibilities for high complexity general supervisors under 42CFR493.1463

Example of Essential Functions:

  • The general supervisor must be accessible to the testing personnel to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established by the Department medical (Technical) Directors or provide alternative back-up, such as Medical Director, department supervisor, and shift supervisor.
  • Responsible for providing day-to-day supervisor of waived/moderate/high complexity test performance by testing personnel.
  • Responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
  • As delegated by the Medical (Technical) Director, is responsible for assuring that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications;
  • As delegated by the Medical (Technical) Director, is responsible for ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning;
  • As delegated by the Medical (Technical) Director, is responsible for identifying and providing orientation/training to all testing personnel and students;
  • As delegated by the Medical (Technical) Director, is responsible for evaluating and documenting the performance of all individuals responsible for waived/moderate/high complexity testing.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Complete knowledge of medical technology theory and practice. Demonstrated knowledge of quality control principles and application. Demonstrated supervisory and management skills. Good oral and written communication skills.

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or Bachelor's of Science in science related field required. Master of Science preferred.
  • ASCP certification or equivalent nationally recognized as MT/MLS certification or categorical certification required.
  • Minimum of four years laboratory testing experience in the respective specialty required.

Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skills in providing appropriate care/contact for patients in the following age groups:

Physical Demands:

Light Work - Lifting up to 20 pounds on an infrequent basis (less than one lift every three minutes and/or carrying up to 10 pounds, or requiring walking or standing to a significant degree (about six [6] hours a day).

Repetition: Repeating the same motion over and over again places stress on the muscles and tendons. The severity of risk depends on how often the action is repeated, the speed of the movement, the required force and muscles involved.

Pay is based on experience, skills and education. If position is part-time, salary will be pro-rated based on scheduled hours. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on specialty if applicable. Non-Exempt positions may have shift differential and/or Overtime paid, if applicable.

Salary range: $67,871.23 - $100,131.20
