Job Description
Teaching Assistant Professor
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor in Spanish and Portuguese. We seek an experienced and innovative educator with expertise in teaching both Spanish and Portuguese language courses at all levels, as well as literature and culture courses. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated experience in course coordination and academic advising. Pending budgetary approval, the position will begin in Fall 2026 with an initial two-year contract, with the possibility of a renewal following satisfactory performance reviews.
Excellence in teaching, advising, and curricular development, along with a strong commitment to undergraduate education, is expected. The candidate must demonstrate broad competence in teaching introductory, intermediate, and advanced Spanish and Portuguese language courses, employing current instructional technologies and foreign language pedagogical approaches (communicative, content-based, multiliteracies, and genre-based pedagogies). The successful candidate will also be able to teach core courses-such as an Overview of Latin American Literature-and/or develop new courses in Portuguese literature and culture.
A PhD in Spanish and/or Portuguese is required at the time of appointment. Native or near-native proficiency in both Spanish and Portuguese is required. Prior experience as a language coordinator is highly desired.
The usual teaching load is three courses per semester, with course reduction depending on coordination and advising duties. Other duties may include participating in departmental and program-wide curricular development and serving on department committees.
Candidates should submit: a letter of application containing a description of academic background, teaching philosophy, current curriculum vitae, names and contact information for three professional references, and evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., a sample syllabus, student evaluations).
Questions can be directed to Prof. Dolores Lima at dlima@pitt.edu.
Review of applications will begin on February 16, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled.
