Job Description

Ravenscroft is an independent, coeducational day school in Raleigh, NC, with approximately 1,250 students in grades PreK-12.

We want to welcome an Engineering Teacher into our community of educators who actively strive to be diverse, equitable, and inclusive. This role is in our IDE (Innovation, Design & Engineering) Department, which offers STEM+-based courses across all three divisions. Candidates should demonstrate empathy, knowledge, and an understanding of the diverse backgrounds in our community; place importance on genuine and authentic connections with students, faculty, staff, and parents; be able to work collaboratively with team members of diverse backgrounds; and have the capacity to model an attitude of unyielding curiosity and a growth mindset.

REPORTS TO: Director of Educational Technology

Responsibilities and Competencies:
This experienced teacher should bring energy and passion for teaching Engineering and Robotics. Three specific components anchor this role:

  1. Teaching a reduced course load of all engineering-related courses in the Upper School IDE Department. Specific course teaching assignments include PLTW Engineering Essentials, PLTW Principles of Engineering and Robotics, but may adjust due to curricular needs.
  2. Serving as the Innovation Lab Coordinator (our Makerspace).
  3. Coaching our Robotics Team (which involves an additional stipend).

Instruction in Engineering

  • Develop and deliver a curriculum that aligns with the skills and competencies students need to thrive in the realm of engineering
  • Exhibit strong teaching skills that demonstrate best practices, including inquiry-based learning, differentiated instruction, and facilitation
  • Teach through the lens of the Ravenscroft Design Process
  • Create a positive, inspiring, student-centered learning environment that encourages inquiry, productive failure, and risk-taking
  • Help develop, implement, and continuously seek best practices in the curriculum
  • Engage in ongoing professional development directly related to furthering the development of the Engineering components of the IDE Department
  • Foster mutually beneficial relationships between students and members of the larger community, including university and business contacts in innovative fields
  • Be available, as needed, to tutor/coach students in groups or as individuals

Coordination of the Innovation Lab

  • Ensure the safety of all community members in the Innovation Lab by maintaining protocols for using equipment, including a training/badge program for student leaders.
  • Maintain a high level of organization and cleanliness in all lab spaces
  • Coordinate regular maintenance of tools, equipment, and machinery in the lab in conjunction with the Director of Educational Technology
  • Co-manage the lab's budget and coordinate all necessary purchasing with the Director of Educational Technology.
  • Provide support to the Director of Educational Technology in coordinating experiences to help members of our community find ways to utilize the space and equipment
  • Stay abreast of the ever-changing maker/design-related technology (hardware and software) so that the curriculum supported by the lab remains fresh and cutting-edge

Coaching of Robotics

  • Serve as a liaison between team members, volunteer mentors, parents, and Ravenscroft
  • Recruit a diverse group of students for the team
  • Schedule and coordinate meets and competitions
  • Supervise and guide students in building, configuring, and testing robots, including afternoons and weekends during competition season
  • Follow and enforce all safety rules and guidelines of the FIRST Robotics program
  • Manage volunteer recruitment, supervision, training, scheduling, and other related tasks.
  • Track and manage team budget
  • Engage and encourage parents/guardians to get involved in a variety of ways

Other responsibilities and competencies include:

  • Advise approximately 12 students and facilitate the integration of Ravenscroft’s “Lead from Here” curriculum
  • Support social-emotional learning inside and outside of the classroom
  • Demonstrate effective technology skills, including the ability to use Ravenscroft’s learning management systems (Canvas and Veracross)
  • Readiness to receive feedback

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM+-related field
  • PLTW Certification highly desirable
  • Minimum of two years of teaching experience
  • Advanced degrees and certifications are desirable but not required
