Job Description

Gain hands-on experience in industrial automation while applying what you’re learning in the classroom to real-world projects. Premier Automation is seeking a VFD & Design Intern to support the Drives & Systems team with design, testing, commissioning, and documentation related to motor control and VFD-based automation systems.

This internship is ideal for students pursuing an engineering or engineering technology degree who want practical exposure to industrial automation, hands-on learning alongside experienced engineers, and insight into the full lifecycle of automation projects.

Headquartered in Monroeville, PA, Premier Automation designs and manufactures advanced motor control, VFD, and integrated automation systems for industrial customers worldwide. Interns work closely with engineers and manufacturing teams from design through commissioning, gaining exposure to how industrial control systems are built, tested, and supported in the field.

Internship Details

  • Duration: May – August 2026
  • Schedule: Full-time, Monday–Friday, daytime hours
  • Compensation: Competitive hourly pay based on academic year
  • Location: On-site at our Monroeville, PA facility
  • Travel: Occasional travel for site visits or project support may be required
  • Interview Process: Virtual screening, on-site interview, and facility tour (interviews begin in February; selections finalized by the end of March)

Key Responsibilities

As a VFD & Design Intern, you will:

  • Support engineers with electrical design tasks, including reviewing schematics, layouts, and documentation
  • Assist with VFD configuration, parameter setup, and system testing under guidance
  • Participate in manufacturing checkout, customer shop testing, and commissioning preparation
  • Help create and maintain documentation such as wiring diagrams, test records, and commissioning reports
  • Assist with troubleshooting and system support during testing or startup activities
  • Support field installation or service activities as needed
  • Assist with preparing documentation that supports project planning and quoting activities under guidance

Qualifications

What We’re Looking For:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology (EMET), or a related technical field
  • Basic understanding of electrical circuits, AC/DC power, motor control concepts, or automation systems
  • Interest in VFDs, motor starters, and industrial automation
  • Exposure to CAD tools such as AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, or similar is helpful
  • Introductory exposure to PLCs or drive systems (Siemens preferred) through coursework or projects
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Willingness to learn and take on new challenges
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to perform hands-on work in shop or industrial environments, including standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 25–50 lbs, and safely handling tools, components, and equipment
  • Prior internship, co-op, or hands-on technical experience is a plus
