The Opportunity

Key Responsibilities

The Vice President, Risk Data and Transformation is responsible for providing end-to-end strategic leadership to transform the risk and compliance needs within USAA’s Enterprise Risk and Compliance. The executive will set the vision for Enterprise Risk and Compliance, oversee the data analytics and reporting functions, and deliver the technology and analytics roadmap to modernize existing risk systems.  They will develop and implement a comprehensive Risk strategy that addresses emerging risks within the industry and the impact to USAA. The executive will drive innovation in risk management, ensuring alignment with business objectives, maintaining a strong compliance posture, addressing emerging risks within the industry and the impact to USAA. This role partners closely with senior leadership and direct team leadership to drive the business and talent strategy for a business or staff agency while also developing relationships with key partners to include the broader strategy and planning roles across USAA.

This executive will be expected to assess the current state of risk data and transformation efforts, identify strengths and gaps, and develop a credible strategy. This includes evaluating team capabilities, processes, and systems to ensure alignment with enterprise risk objectives.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Provides strategic leadership through evaluation of current processes and programs and recommends enhancements and efficiencies for improvement and appropriate risk tolerance.

  • Conducts a comprehensive assessment of existing risk data teams and transformation initiatives, identifying areas of strength and opportunities for improvement.

  • Evaluates current processes and policies, systems, and operational alignment and develops a go-forward recommendation on enhancements and efficiencies.

  • Partners and develops deep relationships with enterprise leadership and their organizations to shape and drive significant strategic initiatives. Responsible for ensuring initiatives align to a strong control/regulated environment.

  • Establishes necessary management routines with business leaders, support partners, and Executive Counsel units to ensure Enterprise linkage to strategy, business outcomes, talent, and financials.

  • Challenges and leads through continuous improvement on processes and automation. Leads technology and business program deliverables including strategy, cadences, metrics, cross-project dependencies, risks, and change management.

  • Overseas and contributes to large, strategic key initiatives and serves as an integration point to support complex CoSA or Enterprise-wide initiatives.

  • Demonstrates senior executive-level thought leadership, strategy development, and financial and operational planning associated with CoSA data storage, data preparation, data exploration, information governance, analytics, and information delivery.

  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

  • Provides strategic intent and directional guidance in defining and developing overall business analytics strategy aligned to enterprise objectives.

  • Responsible for directing, influencing, and maintaining analytical roadmap and prioritization in alignment with business capability and technology roadmaps.

  • Accountable for ensuring proper strategic change management is in place for program delivery along with measures for success.

  • Maintains current awareness of developments, trends and legal/regulatory changes in the Financial Services industry to determine potential impact to USAA which may require further team research and possible shift in priorities.

  • Ensures appropriate strategic solutions for business requirements are delivered and adopted to mitigate risk and remain a compliant company.

  • Communicates and influences executive stakeholders at all levels across the Enterprise regarding case for change, innovative and risk and compliance strategies, and short-term and long-term impact.

  • Builds and oversees a team of employees for assigned functional areas through ongoing execution of recruiting, development, retention, coaching and support, performance management, and managerial activities.

  • Sponsors broad functional and Enterprise initiatives and may be assigned by the Chief Data & Analytics Officer to chair executive working groups advancing data and analytic capabilities for USAA.

  • Oversees the development of functional policies, procedures and guidelines in alignment with Enterprise standards.

  • Identifies opportunities and facilitates transformative improvements to operating models and systems within assigned Cosa and across the Data and Analytics Community.

  • Responsible for monitoring and holding Information Executives within a CoSA accountable for adherence with Information Governance policy and standards.

Experience and Professional Qualifications

  • 10 years of progressive data and analytics experience developing strategies, managing major initiatives and delivering results within a complex matrix environment.

  • 8 years of people leadership experience in building, managing and/or developing high-performing teams.

  • Demonstrated expert experience shaping and driving strategic agendas, including strategic visioning, and high-profile communications.

  • Extensive experience building data and analytic teams and capabilities to support business decision making

  • Extensive experience leading across complex organizational lines in a matrix structure, preferably for organizations delivering products to customers or members.

  • Recent experience translating complex business strategy and vision into an executable business process plan and successfully delivering components.

  • Experience collaborating with key resources and stakeholders, influencing decisions and managing work to achieve strategic goals.

  • Extensive experience presenting information and building relationships with other executive management and Board of Director stakeholders.

  • Senior executive-level business acumen in the areas of measuring business outcomes, business operations, industry practices and emerging trends.

  • Proven ability to tell a story through data and communicate problem, impact and recommendations effectively with senior leadership.

  • Expert ability to consult and advise senior leaders on analytic needs to achieve business objectives.

  • Experience developing and implementing an analytic strategic roadmap aligned with business needs.

  • Experience with large complex database systems and architecture, structured and unstructured data, with diverse analytics methodologies and approaches.

  • Deep understanding of risk management and compliance practices with experience developing data strategies that mitigate risk.

  • Experience optimizing risk data strategies within complex financial services environments. Must understand the full value chain of second line risk functions and how data flows through modeling, reporting, and decision-making.

  • Strong communicator with the ability to sell a vision and strategy across diverse stakeholder groups.

  • Bachelor’s degree or 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
