Vice President, Energy Storage Software Engineering

Wärtsilä Energy Storage is seeking a visionary and experienced Vice President of Software Engineering to lead our global software and data science organization. This position will be located in Herndon, VA and follow a hybrid work model. This role is responsible for driving the strategic vision, architecture, and execution of software solutions that power our energy storage systems, grid optimization tools, and customer-facing digital services. You will lead a high-performing team across multiple time zones and disciplines, including cloud and edge computing, embedded systems, data science, and control theory.

Key Responsibilities

• Define and execute the software engineering and data science strategy aligned with Wärtsilä's energy transition goals.
• Lead and scale a global team of ~90 professionals, fostering a culture of innovation, agility, and engineering excellence.
• Oversee the development and continuous improvement of the GEMS Digital Energy Platform and other mission-critical software products.
• Partner with product management, hardware engineering, customer success, and other business units to deliver integrated, customer-centric solutions.
• Champion the adoption of modern technologies, cloud-native architectures, edge computing, and real-time data systems.
• Ensure software quality, security, scalability, and compliance with industry standards and best practices.
• Monitor performance metrics and ensure timely delivery of high-impact software and data solutions.
• Manage budgets, vendor relationships, and strategic technology partnerships.
• Represent Wärtsilä in industry forums and with key customers as a leader in energy software innovation.

Qualifications

• 15+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in executive leadership roles.
• Proven track record of leading large-scale software development in energy, IoT, or industrial automation sectors.
• Deep expertise in cloud-native architectures, edge computing, and real-time data systems.
• Experience with energy markets, grid operations, or energy storage systems is highly desirable.
• Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; MBA is a plus.
