Yard Operator
Swenson Granite Work a company of Polycor Group is looking for a Yard Operator. This person will be responsible for the safe handling, movement, staging, and transport of granite blocks, slabs, and related materials within the manufacturing yard.
This role requires operation of forklifts, wheel loaders, and CDL-B commercial vehicles. The position supports production flow, shipping, and receiving while maintaining strict adherence to safety, DOT, and OSHA standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Block and Slab Handling
- Safely move, stage, and organize granite blocks, slabs and finished goods as necessary.
- Load and unload flatbed trucks, trailers and dump trucks.
- Properly secure stone loads using straps, chains, edge protectors, and blocking as necessary.
- Identify slab types, finishes, thicknesses, and stone ID tags to ensure correct staging
Equipment Operation
- Operate large forklifts (Up to 35T) and wheel loaders with common attachments.
- Operate CDL-B vehicles for yard moves and local stone deliveries as required
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and report maintenance issues
Yard Organization & Production Support
- Maintain clean, clearly marked material storage and traffic lanes
- Stage material for production, shipping and disposal per daily schedule.
- Store and retrieve material for production orders while maintaining a inventory rotation targets.
- Support physical inventory counts and material tracking through the use of a handheld tablet connected to our inventory management system.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all OSHA, DOT, and company safety policies as presented.
- Wear appropriate PPE at all times to include safety-toe-shoes, gloves, safety glasses. A hard hat is also required when not operating equipment with an enclosed cab.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, damage, or near-miss incidents
General Duties
- Perform yard housekeeping, debris removal, and seasonal snow/ice control
- Assist maintenance and production teams as needed
- Complete required load documentation, inspection logs, and delivery paperwork
Requirements:
- Valid CDL Class B license (air brake endorsement preferred)
- Experience operating forklifts and loaders in a stone, construction, or industrial yard
- Experience in handling heavy materials
- Knowledge of load securement practices for flatbeds and dump trucks
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and safely work in a active manufacturing yard setting.
- Authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Valid CDL Class B license (air brake endorsement preferred)
- Prior experience in a granite, marble, or stone fabrication facility
- Experience handling granite blocks and/or slabs
- Forklift certification
- Familiarity with electronic inventory systems
- Basic mechanical aptitude for equipment inspection and basic maintenance
Physical & Work Environment:
- Basic mechanical aptitude for equipment inspection and basic maintenance
- Heavy industrial stone yard and manufacturing environment
- Exposure to dust, noise, weather extremes, and moving equipment
- Frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, and equipment operation
- Mandatory use of PPE at all times
Working Conditions:
- Employment status: Permanent / Full-time.
- Schedule/first shift: 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
- Salary rate: $28 - $31 based on experience.
